How is a tamper used in making espresso?!

Question:

How is a tamper used in making espresso?

I have an espresso maker that comes with a tamper. It seems to me that even without using this tamper, I am still able to make a good espresso. What is the use of this tamper?

Answers:
The tamper is used to pack the grinds a bit which will make the coffee sronger as it will take the water a bit longer to pass through. You can certainly make good espressp without it.

A tamper is used to pack the coffee into the filter. usually around 30 lb of pressure is recommended.
