Milk, Fact or Fiction?!

Question:

Milk, Fact or Fiction?

I was told be a friend of mine the other day that it is impossible to drink an entire gallon of milk in less than an hour. (Ya, don’t ask me how we got on that subject) He said your body will reject it and cause you to vomit! Now, I have never heard of such a thing and I am wondering if this is BS or if there is scientific proof of this?

Answers:
The Gallon Milk Challenge:

Despite the seemingly simple nature of the challenge, it is widely regarded to be nearly impossible to complete. There are a number of proposed theories for this:

The high volume of lactose in the milk, causing a gag reflex.
The high volume of milk fat which cannot be digested quickly enough (the same reason to drink milk after ingesting some poisonous substances).
The reaction between milk proteins and stomach acid, causing the milk to curdle and fill the stomach.
Despite these theories, it is possible although extremely uncommon for a person to be able to complete a gallon challenge. On August 12, 2006, at the 6th Annual Gallon Challenge in front of a crowd of about 40 people including local press, Joseph Ubriaco and Raymond Donnelly and Joseph Herbert completed the gallon challenge successfully. The current gallon challenge world record is 41.32 seconds, held by James Pattani - a video of which exists online.

Other successes:

October 30, 2004: Orrin Goldsby in Eugene, Oregon, completed the gallon within the hour. He waited the hour after and never vomited the milk.
April 1, 2007: Ethan Mohr of Ohio State University in 45 minutes. Ethan did not vomit even in the hours after the challenge.
April 13, 2007: Michael Brundage at SUNY Oswego in Oswego, NY, finished in 40 minutes with spectators watching, then waited his time before claiming victory.
April 21, 2007: Steven Shumaker of Florida State University also completed the challenge.
May 22, 2007: Michael Zimmerman of University of Central Florida completed the challenge in 52 minutes.
By contrast, most participants are unable to even ingest the entire gallon of milk.

The difficulty increases in British attempts at the gallon challenge, where the British imperial gallon (1.2 US gallons) is used. This was completed by Neil Vessey of Scunthorpe, Lincolnshire on May 2nd 2007 during a competition between 10 former Schoolmates, Neil being the only person to complete the challenge successfully using whole milk

I don't know if it's always the case, but I have a personal experience that may help. I drank a gallon of milk within 45 minutes and I was sick to my stomach shortly after. I usually have a very strong stomach so this was strange for me. It came out of nowhere. All of a sudden I was running to the bathroom!

dont know about milk, but a radio show does it every year with egg nog, and it cant be done

fact...i tried it and failed...cost me 30$ in bets

it's true. your body rejects the fat/calcium.

i've seen it, real-life, more than once. it's pretty gross. the one guy didn't even make it past a 1/2 gallon before he puked. over and over.

This is actually a proven fact. A few friends of mine didn't believe it so they went to the store and got two gallons of milk, one for each. Everything was fine for the first half an hour but a little bit after that they started puking up what looked like cottage cheese....nice visual huh?

Drinking contests of any sort are bad news.

i have heard that it is impossible.. but like the lady above said a few people have done it.

I completely disagree with what your friend told you. It is possible to drink an entire gallon of milk within an hour. I used to do it on a regular basis when I was a kid. Believe me, I got it lots of trouble for finishing off all the milk the day my mom bought it. I drank milk like I now drink water. The glasses we had at home were 16 ounces. I'd fill one glass and down it, then fill it again and down it again in less than a minute when I was thirsty. Many times, I did finish the entire gallon. And several of those times, I did it within an hour.
