Now that summer time is here, I would like to make some sun tea?
My grandmother used to make the most delicious sun tea, but she passed on before she could show me how to make it and tell me how long to leave it out in the sun, does anyone have suggestions on which tea to use and how long I should leave it out in the sun?
Answers:
Put 4 to 6 tea bags into a clean 2 quart glass container. Fill with water and cap. Place outside where the sunlight can strike the container for about 3 to 5 hours. Move the container if necessary to keep it in the sun. When the tea has reached its desired strength, remove from sun and put it in the refrigerator. You may or may not want to remove the tea bags at this point. I usually don't.
The tea will probably taste more mellow than what you are used to from using boiling water. The slow seeping has a way of bringing out a slightly different flavor from the tea. Also, because you didn't use boiling water, you should refrigerate the tea and drink it up pretty quickly - a day or two. It will not keep as well as iced tea made from boiling water.
I usually make sun tea with various forms of herbal tea. You could use english breakfast tea and substitute one bag gfor a peach or blackcurrant or other flavoured tea if you prefer. Sometimes you can put in a few sprigs of fresh mint as well.
Use Lipton or Tetley
SUN TEA
1 gal. cold water
6 tea bags
Place cold water in large glass jar. Add tea bags. Close lid and loosen a little. Put in sun until water is dark. Remove tea bags and drink over ice
Sun tea was popular when I was growing up. I use 8 regular tea bags for gallon jug of water. Then just set it out for a few hours. You will have to experiment with different # of tea bags etc. depending on your taste. I usually add 1/2 cup of sugar to it as well.
Lipton actually has new colde brew tea bags. They are bigger tea bags and you can just had them to cold water and leave the bags in for just a few minutes. I believe the box says 1 bag per gallon, but I usually use 2 bags.
