Eggnog (or egg nog) is a sweetened dairy-based beverage made with milk, cream, sugar, beaten eggs (which give it a frothy texture), and flavoured with ground nutmeg and liquor such as rum, brandy, or whisky.

Eggnog

Eggnog (or egg nog) is a sweetened dairy-based beverage made with milk, cream, sugar, beaten eggs (which give it a frothy texture), and flavoured with ground nutmeg and liquor such as rum, brandy, or whisky. Eggnog is popular in North America (and to a much lesser extent in the United Kingdom). Eggnog is associated with winter celebrations such as Christmas and New Year's and traditionally presented in a punchbowl, although can also be prepared in a cocktail shaker as a bar drink.

Makes about 2-1/2 quarts.

12 eggs
3 pints heavy cream
1 cup granulated sugar
nutmeg
1 cup bourbon whiskey
1 cup cognac
1/2 tsp salt

Beat yolks until light in color. Slowly add bourbon, cognac, while beating at slow speed. Chill 3 hrs. Add salt to whites, beat to peaks. Whip s cream until stiff. Fold whipped cream into yolk mixture, then fold in the beaten egg whites. Chill one hour. Serve with nutmeg sprinkled on top. For thinner mixture add 1 or 2 cups of milk. Serve in a punch bowl or another big bowl.

Personally I like very plain eggnog:

1 egg, beaten
1 glass milk
1-2 teaspoons sugar, to taste
Tiny pinch of salt
Freshly grated nutmeg on top

Beat/whisk it all together or put it in a blender. Strain and pour it into a glass, grate nutmeg on top.

I thought the ones with cream and rum would be even better, but I tried it last christmas and it was too thick for me. I felt like I was drinking pudding!

You can also make a cooked egg nog, but it obviously takes longer. Some people are funny about raw eggs, and I think they're a no-no for pregnant women. But I've never tried it. Google for it, or search recipezaar.com
