"Old" bottled water...?!

Question:

"Old" bottled water...?

My wife says there's some sort of bacterial danger in opening a bottled water, drinking from the bottle, and letting it sit for a day or more, then drinking from it again. Is "Old" water bad, and can it make you sick? Please give sources...Thanks

Answers:

i dont think the waters bad..and i dont have any sources..but a friend of mines aunt got some kind of bacterial infection on her mouth/lips from resusing the plastic bottles that the water comes in..thats all i know about that

If you've got a microscope, or can get access to one, you can prove it to yourself. Open the bottle, take a drink, and let it sit out for a day. (Be sure to test a sample before you drink so you can see what you are comparing it to.)

You do accept that you have bacteria in your mouth, right? When you drink from a bottle, no matter how carefully, the backwash will escape back into the bottle. And the bacteria in the backwash will multiply. It depends on conditions, such as how warm it is, or if you were chewing crackers and some of them got into the water as well (food will make the pathogens increase ever-more-enthusiastically).

If you want to be safe, there are several options. Pour the water into a paper cup, then put the bottle in the fridge for no more than 24 hours. Or drink, then freeze the rest (bacteria don't multiply very quickly at 0 degrees C). Or drink the whole bottle, or share with your wife -- she probably needs her liquids too.

To tell you the truth, the chances that you will be seriously ill from this kind of behavior is pretty low. But it's kind of gross for your wife to think about your backwash in her bottle of water. And, if you are one of the unlucky few, well, it's not pretty. Why take the risk?

Good luck!

honestly i do that alot i havent got sick ever.so i dont think anything is wrong about drinking water then putting it away then drinking it again.i just put it in the fridge then end up drinking the rest later.

I would think that the bacteria thrive in the warm environment of your mouth, but would fail to grow in the unregulated temp of the water

The only way it can get bad as if it's flat water.Yes you can tell when it's flat.

Though it's probably not the greatest thing, I'm sure it won't kill you man. I do think germs from your mouth can grow in a used bottle of water, but I have "emergency" water in my car that has sat for weeks after being opened and sipped from that I have used again, I'm still here *falls over dead*
