Plastic Tea Bags?!
Plastic Tea Bags?
So I buy these new pyramid tea bags. Guess what they are made out of plastic.I always thought heat and plastic was not good to put in your body. I called the co. and was told its PET plastic the same kind of plastic orange juice comes in . I don't put my bottle of OJ in hot water so whats the deal here?

I think it is the temp that matters. Water boils at 212 F. That is not as high as fats can get in a microwave. I think the big problem with plastics is when you reach temps where they start to melt. So....no microwaving in plastics. I would think an application such as a tea bag would be safe. But hey, if you're worried, there is always loose tea, which I think tastes better anyway.
Not all plastics melt at 100 degrees C (which is what boiling water would be). There are many plastics that have a much higher melting temperature and are commonly used for cooking (e.g., there are plastic spoons that are used food cooking and can withstand several hundred degrees).
You can, believe it or not, put an OJ jug into boiling water without it melting. I wouldn't suggest ingesting the water, since the inks on the outside of the jug might not be edible.
That is very wierd. I'd stay clear of that product. There are some plastics that are more safe than others when heated but its never a good idea to heat plastic that is associated with a product you consume.
