If coffee is a stimulant, why does it always seem to make me feel drowsy?
Answers:
Though I am not a doctor, my initial thought is that you may have a chemical imbalance. I'm 22, and while growing up could never understand why every stimulant I ever consumed (chocolate, coffee, etc) always had the opposite effect on me.
At 13, I was diagnosed with severe ADHD and was put on Ritalin. It was then that it all made sense. To my brain, any stimulant had the opposite effect; it calmed me down.
I'm almost 23 now and still have ADHD just as bad as I ever have. I'm on a better medication now (Concerta) and though I still have to manage my life around this nasty and distracting disorder, it helps at least knowing WHY things effect me differently.
If you're truly concerned about your health, then try having a doctor give you the battery of tests to see if you fall under this condition. If you're not worried that it's effecting you in a negative manner, then there's nothing to worry with. But from first-hand experience, a chemical imbalance seems to fit.
If you drink alot of it, the caffiene in coffe will actually lose it's effect and in rare cases, have the opposite effect.
are you sure its not decaf? try tea
It doesn't really make sense....
Could you have a mild allergy to one of the ingredients in the coffee??
Take in account that the effects of a coffee usually take around 15minutes to be really felt....
This happens with me some times too. usally if i'm already tired, but need something to perk me up. It especially happens with red bull... I always thought of it as a mental thing
As another answerer said, the effects vary and also milk causes drowsiness. I guess sugar and caffeine do, too, after the initial energy/stimulant spikes (what goes up must come down).
when i get up in the morning and have my coffee it's often like a sedative. i do know what you mean. i've literally fallen asleep in a chair with a cup in my hands, but that is usually after a long day. one quick cup in the morning will not have this effect, however two or three cups on an empty stomach is almost guaranteed to.
The 2nd answer could be correct cause I am not able to have coffee besides other things and its cause I have electrolyte deficiency so any stimulant I have has the opposite effect in my case lethal so in some circumstances it may give a chemical imbalance so get it checked out good luck
Some people who already have alot of natural energy find that caffeine has an adverse effect.
I think irb has got i spot on. Coffee is my bedtime drink, Ive got ADD. But don't worry its not heavy.
You're obviously not drinking enough of it! Try two teaspoons of coffee - or maybe some git's substituted it for decaff!
i could drink it and go to sleep too
Perhaps there is something in it which doesn't agree with you. Or it could simply make you feel drowsy as its a hot drink and the heat can sometimes have that effect. Try drinking hot water with lemon to see if you still feel drowsy after that-if you do then you'll know its the effect of the heat that produces it, if not its something in the coffee itself that produces the effect. Although coffee is a stimulant, if you drink it regularly your body becomes used to the caffeine, and it no longer produces the effect it once did. That's why some people drink vast quantities of it with no adverse effects, but others would get stomach aches and "the coffee shakes" with the same amount. Do the coffee coffee shake!!! lol xxx
Well, I have the same issue. I can drink a nice big mug of green tea and eat half a pound of candy and then just get tired.
I think I metabolize everything so fast that I miss the jolt. Could be true for you too.
coffie is definately dope and it makes me angry some people think it makes add-adhd people concentrate i dont like to drink it but if you leave some out the next day i will drink it so dont waste it and if i start i will not stop til im sick from it
