How do you get a proper cappuccino in Starbucks?!


Question:

How do you get a proper cappuccino in Starbucks?

What do you have to say to get a proper cappuccino, as in the type you get in Italy? A short drink, about equal parts coffee and foamed milked. Not a tall cup of watery milk that barely tastes of coffee.

I've recently taken to asking for what they term a ‘macchiato’, with an extra shot. Even this has started to come out as a lacklustre cup of milk. What do I need to ask to get something resembling a *real* cappuccino?

Unfortunately I am not able to carry around with me the supplies to make coffee all day wherever I am. More unfortuately Starbucks have aggressively bought up virtually every other coffee shop in London, so there is very little choice!

It's really hard to help because I don't know how the baristas work at your Starbuck's, but I will try.
Try ordering it as a "dry cappuccino." What you are probably getting is a wet cappuccino where it is made with much less foam and more milk. Make sure the baristas at your local SB are "free-pouring" the milk IMMEDIATELY AFTER the milk is taken off the steam wands. As long as the milk is poured right after, it should produce much more foam milk. We are (supposed) to do all our cappuccinos in the italian style which is a very small amount of drink and a ton of foam. The goal of our cappuccinos are to be as light as possible. Make sure yours is, and if it isn't have them remake it! Your baristas might be doing it in the "wet" style because people that are not used to our cappuccinos, but rather gas-station ones, think ours are crap(!). Sometimes baristas use the wet style just to avoid this problem.

When you order a macchiato, you are getting an extremely bitter drink because the shots of espresso are poured through the milk(which is 3/4 steamed and 1/4 foamed). Macchiato is the Italian word for "mark," which is why there is a cross-hatch pattern on top of the drink.

You don't, you go to the cheaper shop down the street, it comes from the same bean...

Try going elsewhere. Make it at home, home is the only place to get a decent cup of coffee.

Starbucks? Really? That is so yesterday.

Minimum wage employees that are barely old enough to drink coffee, who haven't been on earth long enough to know what a good cup of coffee tastes like and who can't even spell cappuccino. That is who you are talking about, right? And you think it's them who have the problem. You are paying $4 for a cup of watered down milk that doesn't taste like anything.

Invest in a good coffeemaker, I have a Krups, it makes cappuccino just fine.

You can tell them exactly what you want. ie-I want equal parts coffee and foamed milk. Starbucks will make exactly what you want. Plus, I'm pretty sure that's a simple order, compared to the other spefications people request.
