Old vending machines have canister's inside of them, in each canister is a different substance (ie coffee, tea ).when a selection is made in this case coffee, an amount of coffee is dispensed into a bowl if sugar and milk is wanted these also are dispensed into separate bowls,an amount of water is added and then the mixture travels down a tube into your cup.
Modern vending machines have pre packed cups(ie cups with coffee sugar and milk already in the cup)when chosen the cup is dispensed and water added.
You can also get coffee in small sachets, insert the sachet into the machine and press to add water, coffee dispensed into cup.
