Probably because they have to work long shifts,antisocial hours,perform a boring set of tasks and work for a pittance.
The trend for supermarkets to remain open 24 hours (especially around Christmas and holiday breaks) means that many workers are now on call during the night -as if weekend working wasn't enough.
It was better than this in Dickens' times and serves to beg the question 'Whatever happened to the unions?'
As for 'poor understanding of the English language' at least these are people who have sought work as opposed to being welfare supported immigrants and I think you must at least give them credit for that.
Maybe they've found that despite their best endeavors,the people they serve turn out to be as arrogant and rude as they themselves are perceived as moody and unhelpful?

There are certain qualifications for the job. You have to be moody and unhelpful, and if you aren't then they send you on a 6 weeks course, until you are.
Have you ever tried dealing with the public, as they do for long periods. Its not an easy task. Members of the public can be moody and grumpy, and I should think its pretty difficult to keep a smiling face at times. Though in my experience many of them do, especially if you smile at them first.
your so right they think their demi gods.where i live its a white middle class area,and the staff of my local store really think they are a cut above the rest.my mother wont take sh*t of anyone and when she goes in she gives them murder,she tells them of when they talk instead of work.they hate her but i think shes great sticking up for her right to shop in a abitch free environment.

i work in somerfield and can say honestly, a supermarket is one of the most horrible and depressing places to work, it's a hella lot harder than people think and they're so strict and yell at you for every tiny detail, they make you cancel plans you've had for weeks to work and tell you how lucky you are that you still have a job because of booking a holiday during the Easter rush. It's terrible and I can't wait to leave!!!! So it's probably not just Tesco and Sainsburys, I do try to be nice but I cannot guarantee that I will, so on behalf of all the supermarket workers, I apologies, it's not because we are just being rude, ti's just it's such a horrible job and I'd rather be anywhere else in the world then there
i know some people can be moody but on the whole the guy's at my local supermarket are cheerful and we have a bit of a laugh
....complain to the manager about the moodiness and unhelpfulness....or write to the head offices.... I live in Canada and they staff, for instance, at Walmart can't do enough for their customers - they are great... tell the manager if things don't improve you will take your business elsewhere
Have you ever worked in a supermarket? Can you imagine screaming kids, people blocking your path, dropped bottles to be cleaned up, shelves to stack... is it any wonder?

i work in tesco myself an i can honestly say i try my hardest to be polite to the customers and as helpful as i can be the tesco were i work opened just under a yr ago and all the people who work there have tried there hardest to make the store work seein as it is really understaffed so its extra hours people are workin but am tellin u its not easy wen ur gettin threatned every day by the public bcoz there card has declined like its our fault or the drunks come in an give u abuse we do nothin to deserve it at the end of tha day were tryin to make a livin but if people like u come in an treat us horrible expect to be treated the same way back were human beings at the end of the day an why should we take loads off the public if i came into ur place of work and was nasty to u you wouldnt like it so cut people some slack its not that easy

I've never had a problem with staff at tesco or Salisbury's. It's asda staff i have found to be rude in that they don't speak or smile.
Its probably because they are paid the legal minimum wage and have to deal with the public, who can be moody, demanding and aggressive.
