That's because hasn't taken a good look at himself/herself,most likely equally black from wood fire soot ,i guess.These days with bright & shiny utensils what would the pot call the kettle,another name,another colour,wonder if would still have the same meaning.

Yes this old saying still goes. It is nothing racial at all . It's simply a statement that means your saying or accusing someone of doing something that your guilty of yourself.
just an old saying that means don't judge others when ur guilty too.
