well, what are you trying to avoid? the sugar, fat or caffiene? if just one of those things then you can change sodas. if not you can try other alternatives like juice, tea etc. it helps to always have a water bottle with you also.

I drink about 12 cans a day. The doctor told me that's fine. Drink caffeine free and sugar free & he saw no harm in it.

need to replace it with something, I'd try some of the flavors water to start, and then you may be able to switch over to plan water. I understand your wanted to drink less soda pop, but as long as it's sugar free, caffeine free it really isn't that bad for you.
You could be doing things that are a lot worse. If it bothers that much tough don't buy any for the house. That way when you crave it ,you have to decide if it's worth it to have to go out and get it or just drink water.It's a start and one step at a time is the only way to go.
