Regarding coffee - what is 'flat white' and 'short black'?!

Question:

Regarding coffee - what is 'flat white' and 'short black'?

Pardon my ignorance here, but not being one who eats out much, these' terms' have always puzzled me! Maybe I'm too old or something, but whatever happened to the question...'milk and sugar?' !

Answers:
The question "milk and sugar" probably disappeared when people started using espresso coffee machines instead of those drip filter things that make the muddy coffee that sits in a pot for an hour or two before you get a cup from a surly waiter!!!
A flat white is just a shot of black coffee with warm or steamed milk added to top it up - no froth like a cappuccino (which has loads of froth) or a latte (which has a little bit).
A short black is a very small cup containing just very strong black coffee. If you add a bit of froth to a short black, then you get a macchiato!!!

haha i still dont know! when we went to australia you cant just ask for a cup of coffee, it is all in measurements and colors....its all to confusing

It's an Australian term used to describe a milky coffee. It's pretty much like a "latte" except it's served in a coffee cup rather than a glass.
