Its due to insulation. The inner container is covered with a outer cover with no air in between. So there is no conduction of heat from outside to the inner layer. The outer layer is silver painted, to make sure heat is reflected. There is another plastic container which houses the container, so very little heat can permeate in.

This has the same effect that foil has on covered-up food...Metal is a conductor...not only of electricity, but heat as well. It contains the heat and keeps it from seeping away and mixing with the room temperature/cool air(at least for a while depending on the quality of the metal, the temperature of the drink to start with, and the amount that it has to keep hot.
Flask is made up of two layers with a gap between them and that gap is Vaccum,The inner layer is made of glass and that too is coated with silver colour which is very reflective, so as we know that glass is a bad conductor of heat and bcoz of its reflectiveness it reflects heat back and does not allow the heat to go out. Now there is a vaccum gap after this layer, which is again bad conductor of heat. Then there is third layer made of again some bad conductor of heat like plastic etc. Therefore, tea coffee remain hot in a flask.

go for the thermos flask approach most of the time. Normally I take my coffee black, but if I do use the departmental vending machine it forces me to use milk and sugar to disguise the taste. Actually, in that situation I normally go for the hot chocolate instead :D
