The principle is the same as the electric boiling water to pull the flavor out of the beans. Imagine a 3 tier contraption, sorta like the baby rattle that separates the different colored balls. In the top(1) tier you would place the boiling water. In the middle (2) tier you would place the coffee and filter if desired most of the have perforated holes that work as a permanent filter. The bottom (3) tier will hold the coffee that has been "waterfalled" from the hot water. The final product in that barrel and serve. The top and middle tiers are not accessible from the spout.
