Wouldnt a brita filter just get better with time?!

Question:

Wouldnt a brita filter just get better with time?

I figure if the filter ports get clogged that just makes it even less likely for bad stuff to get through . wouldn't it just filter better than way.

(No I have not tried this for all the people who are just going to write "ewww that's nasty")

Answers:
Brita filters are carbon filters, they filter chemicals such as chlorine and improve taste. They don't do anything for particles, or hardness, or other "bad stuff". The carbon can only hold so much, then it loses effectiveness.

You have to change the filter because after about 40 uses it becomes useless and it does not filter which is the whole reason you got it in the first place.

Actually I understand where your logic is coming from, but the brita filters are specially designed to block out the harmful elements that come from tap water. When they become overused they lose this ability less and less because they are becoming unable to decipher what is bad and what is good. Brita filters are the best inexpensive filters out there right now because they take out the bad stuff, but keep good things in like fluoride in the water. Fluoride is what keeps are teeth strong. You should change your filter every 6 weeks.

No; some of the filtering ability depends on the action of a molecular bond occurring between the filter components and chemicals in the water. Once the substances in the filter have all bonded with those chemicals (particularly chlorine and heavy metals), there's no more left to "grab" the bad stuff out of the water, so it just passes through.

Do you think your liver gets better with time? Or your oil filter?

In theory if you leave it in long enough, NOTHING will get through.

The objective is to let the good stuff get through while blocking the bad stuff.

just get an "ION EXCHANGE" tap filter, Culligan makes one for $6, filters are $6. It's the purest water on Earth, lab quality. The "PUR" filter kit is $30, and a cartride replacement is $30, you do the math ? It's also a much more efficient filter than "Britta".
