what does it taste like? is it similar to root beer?

Much richer, more complex taste than root beer but similar. Delicious.
Well most production root beers have some in it along with licorice root, vanilla and other flavours, pure sasparilla is available in the Southwest USA, in Texas, New Mexico and Arizona.
It was once the main flavour, but is now just an added ingredient, you can buy it at a good health food store, it looks like a stringy root, and if you can get all the other ingredients, you can make your own root beer base syrup.
