Why doesn't pepsi discredit coke over the past cocaine ingredient?
Answers:
That was a long time ago.
Because it is 2007 and Coca Cola has not used cocaine in the recipe since like the 20's. It would be stupid for Pepsi to point that out as it has been almost 100 years ago. it really has no relevance, If Pepsi was around back then they too would probably have had cocaine in their drinks too.
Because it doesn't contain it anymore. Plus, cocaine was legally dispensed from pharmacists back then, which is how Coke got invented in the first place.... Pharmacy soda fountain shops.
Because Pepsi and Coke essentially orginiated from the same place/same idea by separate people. Both were designed as a syrup used as preventative medicine and both became much more enjoyable when sold to soda fountains and added to carbonated water.
Coke contained Cocaine and was targeted to the upper classes. Pepsi was marketed at much the same time (there's a long debate over who came first coke or pepsi) but targeted to the lower classes who could not afford the high cost of coke.
Coke removed the "cocaine" aspect from their drink around 1903. This must not have altered the flavor much as people continued to drink it. Coke and Pepsi grew into their respective markets and no longer fall into a upper/lower class category. Also depending on the area of the country, one surpases the other. For example, if I'm in Florida and I order a "coke," they will more than likely serve me a Coca-Cola. If I am in Michigan and order a "coke," they'd serve me a Pepsi. Of course, those in Michigan would know I was a tourist since they call it Pop.
Pepsi does well enough on it's own without having to dredge up old and tired attacks on Coke. Pepsi does exceedingly well with the covetted 18-24 year olds. Plus, they do better with their flavor additions. Pepsi Vanilla being so much better tasting that Vanilla Coke.
And finally, Pepsi does better with their advertising campaigns by utilizing young stars and much more flashy and hip productions.
In other words, Pepsi doesn't need to.
