Orange juice?!?!?!

Question:

Orange juice?!?!?

My 9 year old nephew asked me a question that left me baffled! We made orange juice b4 skool, all we did was squeeze if into the pitcher, he want to know; and so do I, how does orange juice become so thick once its in the pitcher? Why when we pill the orange and eat it alone is the juice thin like water? Sound goofy but hey I wanna know what to tell him! LOL

Answers:
it just seems thin, but in large quantities, it's actually pretty thick in density. Plus when you eat an orange, you don't deal with a lot of liquid, just a small amount. This is assuming you eat one piece at a time. If you were to peel an entire orange and it it like an apple, you'd realize, the juice is very thick..Plus it is sticky once it stays on your hands.

because the membranes that hold the juice packets inside each slice are ground up and flow into the jug with the juice.
