It as some one says cuts the bitterness. My grandfather used to add a pinch of dry mustard powder...the english mustard power too! Sounds weird I know but the coffee tasted amazing and no one would guess it had both those additions! People used to comment on the full bodues flavour! So if you can get it that is another thing for you to try!!

Salt cuts a bit of the bitter flavor of coffee.

I heard it was to take the bitterness out!? Even though it's only a pinch your supposed to use, I never do it.

YUCK!!! Only Americans would do such a thing!

yuk...never heard of that...the best coffee one can buy is from the big island of Hawaii...no pesticides ! Kona.

I've never heard of such a thing. I have a salt tooth, but I don't think I could do that to coffee.

The indigenous people of northern scandinavia also put salt in their cup of coffee but that is because it's hard for them to get all the salt they need.

Inever heard of that 1 before, I've heard too use salt and crushed ice when cleaning your pots. I may have too try it.

My Arab grandpa said it was to draw more of the flavoursome oils out of the grounds - but a pinch is enough. And by the way, coffee should never boil. He would bring the water almost to the boil in an open pot tapering toward the top, take it off the heat when the bubbles began to rise, throw fine grounds on the surface immediately (one tablespoon per cup), stir once with a wooden spoon, then splash cold water on top to make the grounds sink; leave for a couple of minutes then pour into small cups, for Arab style, or larger for "European". If preferred sweet it had a couple of spoons per cup in with the grounds - or one sucked on a sugar cube as you sucked the coffee through your teeth. But never "brewed". His best friend, a famous Greek coffee importer agreed on that, too. Very stimulating! And addictive.

Because they like salty coffee. That is the only thing it does for coffee.
