What's the gross stuff @ the bottom of my Bialetti? Also, cleaning instructions?!

Question:

What's the gross stuff @ the bottom of my Bialetti? Also, cleaning instructions?

I was told by the Italian (to whom I no longer speak) who gave me my Bialetti to NEVER wash the inside of the bottom part of my Moka Express. He said I can wipe it clean, but to never use cleaners in there. Anyone know why? This strange, gel-like substance collects in there if I don't use it. I'm concerned that this stuff is unhealthy, esp. if all I can do is rinse the thing! Anyone know what this stuff is? Do I just simply need to be diligent about emptying it after every use...? Thanks...

Is it the first one on this website? http://www.bialettiusa.com/bialetti/prod...
I'm Italian, living in Italy, everybody here own at least one Moka like that, Bialetti or any other brands. I never heard such advice, it's just aluminum, and everybody use soap.
I never heard of any kind of gel collecting inside...
About that gel-like substance, are you sure your moka is well clean and dry, when you put together the two pieces?

It's algae. wipe that stuff out. I used to empty mine if I was not going to use it for awhile. Vinegar would clean it nicely also, run that through a few times and it will also get rid of any calcium build-up.

You should use Vinegar to clean things that you will be drinking out of. After the vinegar treatment run two cycles with plain water. and dump it out.
