Why did Poll y put the kettle on?!

Question:

Why did Poll y put the kettle on?

Answers: cause poll y did not have any clothes to put on. because her usuall toaster attire didnt fit anymore, xxxxxx Beacuse she had guests, is an excellent host and wanted to make them all a nice cup of tea or coffee! maybe she wanted something to wear around her neck while dancing in the kitchen in her birthday suit... i know i do... because he wanted some tea? goes back to slavery in southern united states, and is an interpretation of Cato's maxim, that when a slave is not sleeping they should be working. IE if no 'proper work 'for slave to do, invent a meaning less task such as dig a hole and then refill it, or in this case, put water on ,take it off (bear in mind this would normally entailed going to the well to draw the water first),and all other associated tasks to make 'tea' Because she was asked, so we could all have tea? The link below had this explanation (direct from the site) of the origins of the nursery rhyme (though there are other links about it):

The lyrics to "Polly put the kettle on" Nursery rhyme
"Polly put the kettle on" was published in 1797. The origin of "Polly put the kettle on" was based on the author having five children - two boys and three girls. There were constant arguments as the boys wanted to play soldiers and the girls wanted to play house! When the girls wanted to play without their brothers they would pretend to start a game of tea party "Polly put the kettle on" and the daughter, called Polly, would put the toy kettle on! As soon as the brothers left Sukey (or Susan) would take it off again! Their father was so amused by this ploy that he set it to words and added the music which were subsequently published.

Hope that helps. Good luck. To woo her lover into dunking his biscuit into her cup of tea!!! So they could all have tea ...... "Polly put the kettle on and we'll all have tea". Didn't get nursery rimes at primary school? well it was so as everybody could have a cup of tea Polly put the kettle on because all her guests wanted to have some hot water to drink because they wanted to pour it onto their cakes because all of polly's friends were really old and had no teeth and polly was a bad cook to start with so the cakes were really hard which is why she could only make hot water and not hot chocolate in the first place.
