Im a coffee virgin... how best to take the plunge?!

Question:

Im a coffee virgin... how best to take the plunge?

ive never had coffee before. it's been on my to do list for a LONG time (yea laugh it up) but i really dont want to miss out (im aware of potential addiction but i dont mind). for someone in my shoes, what's the best blend to start out on (im Canadian so Tim Hortons is fair game). im assuming adding sugar isnt the greatest, so can someone get used to drinking black coffee (and are there health benefits to drinking black?) Thanks...

Welcome to "java land" I'm sure you will take the plunge into the vast "pool of coffee beans" and enjoy every sip or gulp of it....
To be serious a minute....think of coffee like chocolate....some like milk chocolate some like semisweet and others like dark...you can compare the same to coffee..each person has a different taste and sense as to what is best for them....you will find what you love the most later on down the line after you start your journey
If I had not tasted coffee before I'd visit a "coffee bar" and ask them for some samples.....I used to work at a bookstore coffee shop and we always were happy to give out samples...
Study the menu....most "coffee bars" have they "coffee of the day" listed and they will tell you other varieties that are available. In the summertime they make coffee drinks that are frozen or served over ice cubes...some are like milkshakes...
You might like to taste them since it's so hot right now. It's wonderful!
Here is a book I've enjoyed that tells all about the subject. I hope you can find it where you live. there are many books on the subject.
THE JOY OF COFFEE....by Corby Kummer
here is the library number to search for: ISBN 1-881527-53-0
You know the different ways coffee is brewed?
Turkish style and French press
American style uses the drip method
percolated or a filter cone type that drips into carafe.
these were the most popular until recent years when everyone wanted to make coffee like at Starbucks..using the "espresso machine" so the small appliance companies started to put espresso machines for sale to the general public...
Espresso coffee is fine ground it's placed in a cup with a handle that fits under a port and turned tight. on the top of the espresso machine .then hot steamed water goes through it and it feeds down into a waiting coffee cup or pitcher. Milk is heated and frothed usually this action is done on the side of the espresso machine and it's all combined in different ways to make a million different espresso coffee drinks using many ingredients..or a few. . When someone orders a "latte, cappuccino and Americano you will know it's going to be made with "espresso coffee" the coffee is ground in a special way fine enough so the hot steamed water goes through the grounds easily to make the great tasting crema on top the beige richness that appears on the top when it's completed the cycle....well as you can tell there is a lot to be said about drinking coffee....You can buy flavored syrups and also Italian cookies called "biscotti" to dunk in the coffee for a nice treat they are twice baked so they are hard but they are like sponges of goodness when combined with the espresso.
Well enough from this Italian Mama Jazzy Geri

get samples
when you add milk and flavorings it's not the same as tasting the pure coffee....
bye again
