Answers:

The higher prices apply to espresso-based beverages, brewed coffees and other drinks. Bottled drinks are not included in the price jump.

"It's something we regularly evaluate. At this time, we determined it was appropriate with rising energy and fuel costs," O'Neil said. "And it will allow us to invest in total pay and benefits."

In some parts of the country, however, the increase might be slightly less.

"We will try to not have a beverage that cost $3.01," O'Neil said.

Pricing varies across the country, but O'Neil said a 12-ounce, or tall, cup of Starbucks coffee ranges from $1.40 to $1.65; a tall latte goes for $2.40 to $3.10; and a 12-ounce mocha sells for $2.70 to $3.40.

The Seattle-based company also will raise the price of its whole-bean coffee by 50 cents a pound, a 3.9 percent average increase, on 23 of its 27 core coffees. It is the first time the company has raised prices on its whole beans in nine years.
