Answers:

Are you asking about which nations produce the most? Export the most? Have the best? Consume the most? Have historical importance?

The USA leads the world in coffee consumption, and I think our British friends still hold the title for drinking tea.

Tea comes from southern and eastern Asia, I think India exports the most, and it's hard to determine quality nation-by-nation since much depends on how the leaves are processed and handled after harvesting.

Coffee comes from all over the tropical nations of the world--Central and South America, Africa, Java, the Celebes. Ethiopia is recognized as the nation of origin for coffee, and you can get their varietal coffees in speciality shops; Ethiopian Yergecheffe is excellent, and Harrar is not bad.

Most coffee drinkers think that Colombia grows the best beans, but be aware that there are two main varieties of coffee: robusta beans (easier to grow but less tasty to brew--found in most U.S. supermarket brands) and Arabica (harder to grow but tastier). Both are grown in Colombia, with understandably a range in quality.

You might also like the quality of Celebes Kalossi, a very mild coffee that costs twice as much as other varieties.

A lot of the quality of coffee also depends on how it's roasted. If the beans are roasted at too high a temperature they get scorched and you realize a wood-ash flavor (characteristic of Starbucks, where burning coffee is corporate policy). A darker roast yields a drier, sharper flavor than a light roast.
