I can't remember if my mother did give me warm milk or not sorry.

Answers:

That's because milk contains the essential amino acid called tryptophan, which is converted into seretonin and melatonin in the body. These chemicals cause the body to go into a relaxed mode, hence helping to promote sleep. There might also be a placebo effect involved, from the expectation that the warm milk will help you sleep. Scientists have also pointed out that mammals tend to go into a sleepy mode when the body temperature is warmer, which serves to help the body to cool down, since the body generally slows down during rest and sleep, hence generating lesser heat. Thus, drinking warm milk has the same effect on the body.
