My Method For Bottled Water: Almost as safe as tap water?!
My Method For Bottled Water: Almost as safe as tap water?
We all know that producing this plastic requires a huge amount of fossil fuels. We also know that the water is the same as tap.
Although, there are chemicals such as calcium and phosphorus (not to mention mold) building up in our water pipelines...plus chlorine is added to our tap water to help kill bacteria. Whole neighborhoods have been sickened before because of an overuse of chlorine in the tap system.
Bottled water is bottled from a more public tap source (meaning less pipe it has to go through) and it gets filtered again (removing chemicals, mold, and chlorine). I personally would rather have bottled water rather than tap just for these reasons.
But then there's the problem of gas. When it comes to gas, there are three problems:
1) Transportation
2) Making Plastic
3) Waste (Not really gas related, but still)

1) Transportation
2) Making Plastic
3) Waste (Not really gas related, but still)
1) Bottled water is bottled close to their distribution point, so not too much gas is wasted. It's not a huge number at all.
2) The plastic is going to be made eventually anyways, so it's not like gas is being "wasted".
3) This plastic used to make the bottles is of very high quality, so instead of throwing them away, recycling is so much better.
If we can just recycle the bottles, I think that bottled water is better than tap water...at least to drink.

I also prefer water bottles. I had a reverse osmosis put in for my cooking though and for the ice maker. My water is heavily filtered before it comes out of my faucet. Our tap water first runs through the water softener, then a filter system, Then the RO system and a additional filter. Have you ever noticed that your laundry water doesn't get bubbly when it is washing? Thats because of all the chemicals and minerals in the water is weighing it down. Now that my water is filtered I use half the soap. I even save money on shampoo and conditioner because just a little works so much better then a lot with hard water. =)
