Why does my coffee smell like petrol?
We bought a jar of instant coffee. When the first cup was made and we took it out of the microwave it had an oily residue on top. Also smelled funny. We both think it smelled sort of like petroleum or something. For whatever reason it didn't smell like anything I would want to drink. I don't wish to name the brand because I don't want to start a rumor at this point but it was a major brand. Any guess as to what is wrong with it?

It isn't the water. We opened a different jar of coffee and made a cup. It smelled and tasted just fine. For sure it is the coffee.

We have been using the same brand for 7 years. We prefer the taste of it over brewed coffee and we don't want the hassle of a coffee pot.

My guess isthat the coffee was humid and they dried it again to resell it.
