Thoughts on non alcoholic wine and lager?!

Question:

Thoughts on non alcoholic wine and lager?

My Partner and I are entering our 8th week with NO alcohol and still feel very positive about giving up. We used to drink way too much (I'm too ashamed to say how much but it was a lot) and we feel so much better.
The reason for my question is that I think we will find Christmas a bit difficult. I was wondering if the non alcoholic wines and lagers available are any good but, would this be a bad idea (going through the motions so to speak) in view of our past?

The answer to your question lies in your motivation for quitting drinking. It sounds like (from your comments) that you suspect you have a drinking problem. If that's the case, then my advice is to learn more about your condition. Comments like "I'm ashamed to say how much.." lead me to believe you already feel that alcohol made your lives "unmanageable".

The risk with "non-alcoholic" versions of wine & beer is that they tend to simulate the conditions that got you into trouble in the first place! I can't tell you how many times I heard someone say "I was drinking non-alcoholic beer and the next thing you know I switched to alcoholic beer!" Most likely they were with the same playmates and playgrounds that got them into trouble in the past, so it's really no suprise.

So, if you are just experimenting with staying sober for awhile and are willing to take the risk that drinking non-alcoholic beer & wine could lead you to swith to the "real thing", then by all means give it a go. But, if you really feel you have a drinking problem and want Solution that really works, please give a program like AA a try.....and stay away from the "non-alcoholic" versions of the same stuff that got yours truly into a lot of trouble in the past.

Good luck and God Bless!
