Can you believe at one time soda and other sweet drinks contained pure sugar?!

Question:

Can you believe at one time soda and other sweet drinks contained pure sugar?

now they contain HFCS (high fructose corn syrup). Because it's cheaper and easier to ship and blend since it's a liquid. It's not like coke and pepsi need to cut costs somehow.

camperdown, yes there is a difference. HFCS is a highly processed product. I'd rather have a more natural product like sugar cane. I'm not saying soda as a whole is natural, but I'd opt for the more natural ingredient of sugar than a highly processed ingredient.

Answers:

Our drinks and sweets don't contain HFCS in Australia, not even the major brands. Most of us haven't even heard of it. They all have normal sugar cane sugar. I couldn't believe how many things had HFCS when I visited the USA - I thought it was really weird. I guess corn crops are cheap for your country whereas sugar cane crops are cheap for ours. It's all sugar, though, so is there really any difference?

Edit -
thanks for extra info, I didn't realise it was so highly processed - that's not a good thing. But neither is highly refined white cane sugar. I avoid it all anyhow. Foods in the USA are much more sweetened than ours, I found. Bread shouldn't be sweet and HFCS does not belong in cheese. And sodas could just have half the sugar and still be nice and sweet enough. Oh, well, drink water I guess! :)
