When stiring a hot cup of tea, coffee etc., the sound is high pitched and gets deeper as you stir?
Doesn't seem to do this if you stir again, why?
Answers: Its because the cup is heating up from pouring in the hot water, and as you stir the liquid at the same time the sound gets deeper. The sound doesn't do this again because the cup is already hot! What sound are you talking about? my mum has the most annoying stir ever. It is so load you can hear it anywhere i the house, she has to bang the spoon all around the cup. When i lived with her, it would always wake me up, i'm sure she done it on purpose cos she knew we had been out till late the night before. maybe in some kind of vortex or some other dimension I've no idea, but have noticed and wondered this myself! Something about the spoon heating up I would imagine. I await a proper answer too! you have too much time on your hands ping the rim using your spoon
opposite the handle it gives a note
90 degrees to the handle same note
45 degrees from the handle the note rises by exactly a semi-tone
this seems to work with any cup
Conclusions cups & spoons occupy a strange area of physics Do you put in a lot of milk? If you drink black tea or coffee you will get a different sound. It is due to the change in temperature. After the first time you stir, two things have happened: 1) The spoon has changed temp. 2) The beverage has cooled, even if just a few degrees from the transferrence of heat thru the spoon. It just like wetting the top of an empty glass with your finger then whiz it around the rim and listen. i do hope I have been of some help
