Answers: I have had both and preferred cafe au lait. The caffe latte seems a little to strong for my liking, probably because it is made with expresso instead of just brewed coffee.... Cafe au lait is simply white coffee, cafe latte is a weak, milky espresso. They are similar but personally I prefer cafe latte. Couldn't say that either was a translation of the other, but they mean the same thing. "Latte" in Italian and "lait" in French are what happened to the the Latin "lact-" stem in those regions. According to wikipedia, they're the same thing- cafe au lait (in Europe) and caffe latte (in Italy) both refer to coffee with steamed milk. But in france, it's actually called cafe creme A cafe Au Lait is black coffee with steamed milk (about a 50/50) A latte is espresso with steamed milk. If you order a latte in any country it will be made with espresso. If you order a Au Lait, it will be made with brewed coffee. Nope, Cafe` Au Lait is American coffee with little steamed milk, whereas Cafe` Latte is Espresso shot with all milk.
A 50/50 American Coffee with milk is called Cafe` Misto and not Cafe` Au Lait.
