Why is pomgranate juice so exspensive?!

Question:

Why is pomgranate juice so exspensive?

Answers: The first respondat has a bit of it right, I am a former chef and was buying juice, molasses and other dried seeds years ago, it is a health fad now, and while true it is a very labour intensive process to extract the juice and it is a fruit that is not like oranges or apples grown widely.

They have just recently started growing them in the US and in other areas, but they were most common to Africa and the Middle East for years.

I find it is a good mix with cranberry or other high anti-oxident type juices, try the newest fad Acai, it is like pomegranite in the qualitys and health benefits in it. Not easy to make. Lots and lots of seeds. It would take a lot of pomegranates to make juice. I love pomegranates. 1) The juice is in the seeds not the flesh of the fruit. There is no real flesh just a pith (the white part) which is very bitter and not really meant to be eaten. Each seed only produces a tiny amount of juice. The juice has to be extracted and then the seeds discarded.

2) It is being marketed as a trendy "miracle food" which means they "can" charge more for it.

3) Lack of competition. I only know of only one company that sells it on a mass market level. I have never seen more than one brand name.

4) Not really a profitable/popular item to grow. Many people think it looks too weird also they make a mess and stain everything! Farmers would rather use their land for more "popular" crops.
