Did you know that Coca Cola used to contain Cocaine?!

Question:

Did you know that Coca Cola used to contain Cocaine?

I remembered this from when I was quite young. I can't remember who told me. Think it was my dad. But I told my 10 year old son the other day. He told everyone at his school, and noboby believed him. Not even the teacher.

This made me doubt myself, and wondered who would've told me something false. I panicked, thinking I'd shown my son up at school, so decided to look it up on the internet.

Much to my relief, I found it DID in fact contain cocaine right up until 1929 when it was discarded totally. Phew!!!!!

Don't you feel great when you're right. ha ha

I'm afraid they don't do it anymore. Sorry if that dissappoints anybody.

Cocaine wasn't illegal at the time it was used, and the amount was so minute, it wouldn't even 'give a fly a buzz'. So my sources tell me. It used to be sold as a medicine.

phew

for a minute there i was worried that this drink DIDNT contain an illegal drug!!

lol i know!
im expecting you will get some serious answers for this though :) yeah I knew that I told some of my friends at work but some allredy knew. I heard it was only sold in drug stores go to there website yes i knew ya i knew that. that's why its called "Coke" Yes... it's common knowledge... except today when AmeriKans who have never heard of it wrongly assume that it isn't true. yes i knew that i hear some countries still sell it that way too im not sure how tru it is but i hear they have it in mexico yes Yes, there was a new recipe for CC after 1929 when it voluntarily removed the small amount of cocaine that had been in the formula for years. One has to understand that cocaine and for that matter heroin were not considered bad back in those days. The Stevenson novel Dr. Jeckell and Mr. Hyde has to do with the heroin addition that plagued Stevenson himself personally. These chemicals were not regulated and could easily be gotten. Many people used them moderately without major concern. It was as the addictive nature of the drugs became known that their use became an issue. The Federal Drug people started working to control them and regulate them. That is why CC was challenged for the use. So they substituted caffeine instead, which apparently is just as addictive, although not not nearly as damaging to get the buzz effect. The formula was kept secret for years and years. When Pepsi came out with a cola formula that was similar there were law suits about infringement and such, but there was never proof that there had been a conversion of the formula. what so you are telling me they don't put it in anymore can i get them done under the trades descriptions act Yeah I know to. It used to be sold as cough medicine. Yes I know it did - but not since about the 1920s/30s
Coca leaves - the raw ingredient of cocaine was an original ingredient of Coca Cola as was Cola ( or Kola ) nuts.
Hence its name Coca Cola

Coca leaves gave it its pep as they were then chewed by Andies natives for energy and to ward off altitude sickness and Cola nuts are known to be calming and induce well being ...
So it is not any wonder that Coca Cola became very popular very quickly as originally it contained two very powerful drugs.

But the Coca was quickly removed - but I think the flavourings still contain some cola derivatives as Cola has never been banned as a drug even though it does have some mood altering (soporific mostly ) effect.
This is from my memory - but I will do some research as to why and when theses ingredients were removed and add to this answer.

Don't have to do the research - someone else above got there first - God people answer these questions so quick that they have posted them before I have finished writing!! love that im right feelin.. but yeah i knew that coke had cocaine since i was little.. big brothers tell all! Yeah, I knew right from an early age. That's why it is called Coca Cola or its "street" name: Coke! Its such an interesting fact (and that I have such a great memory) that I've been able to remember it and where I was when I was told this and who I was with at the time. Yes, I did know that. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to earn a couple of free points by agreeing with you that you answer to your own question was the correct one. The Coca Cola company is still made from the coca leaf. Coca Cola is the only US company with a valid license to import the leaf, but all the drugs are removed long before bottling.
