Remember when coffee was simple? As recently as 15 years ago there were only a handful of options for the world's most popular beverage. Today there are many dozens of ways to drink your cup of Joe, and the stakes in this multibillion dollar business have skyrocketed.

The two biggest players are Starbucks (nasdaq: SBUX - news - people ) and Dunkin' Donuts, owned by U.K.-based Allied Domecq PLC (nyse: AED - news - people ). Between them, they have more than 13,000 locations worldwide.
Dunkin' Donuts was founded 21 years before Starbucks and remained largely unchanged--save for adding foods like bagels and egg sandwiches--until Starbucks' torrid growth forced Dunkin' Donuts to introduce products at a faster pace.

For example, Starbucks was first with a debit coffee card and frozen coffee drink, which Dunkin' Donuts eventually added.

Nowadays, selling coffee involves much more than grinding and brewing beans. Starbucks is focusing as much on the store experience as the product itself. Last week, it announced a partnership with Hewlett-Packard (nyse: HPQ - news - people ) to provide a music download service in its stores.

It's also about hitting customers wherever they might be. Starbucks can be found on every corner, in retail stores, Las Vegas casinos and numerous other places. Dunkin' Donuts is playing catch up, having opened up shop in a few Home Depot (nyse: HD - news - people ) stores in New England and hoping to add more. They both face competition from doughnut darling Krispy Kreme (nasdaq: KKD - news - people ), which offers four "signature" coffees that it blends and roasts daily at its own roasting factory.

Both of them are mediocre. what the upper class yuppies don't know is that some of the best coffee you can get is at McDonalds.
starbucks coffee
Dunkin Donuts coffee is my everyday coffee to get when I'm out and I treat myself occasionally to Starbucks but only like the mocha. I think their regular coffee is too bitter.
Starbucks, so many flavour of coffee!
Definitely starbucks
I think the Dunkin Donuts chain went bankrupt in the UK, I have not seen one for years, so I'd have to go Starbucks as I have never tried Dunkin Donuts coffee.
