Why not low fat?!

Question: Why don't they call 2% milk lowfat anymore?

Answers: Why don't they call 2% milk lowfat anymore?

they feel the percentage of fat has to be listed as "reduced fat" and 1% milk can be considered lowfat milk.

There are now 5 grades of milk

Milk has 8 grams of fat per serving.

What used to be called "Low fat 2% milk" is now labeled "Reduced Fat" or "Less Fat" milk. It has 4.7 grams of fat per serving.

"Light milk" never existed before. It has 4 grams of fat OR LESS.

What used to be "Low fat 1% milk" is now labeled "Low fat milk". It has 2.6 grams of fat.

What used to be called "skim milk" is now labeled "fat-free", "skim", "zero fat", "no fat" or "non fat". It has less than 0.5 grams of fat.

The change occurred in Jan. 1, 1998, in order to conform with the FDA's rules about labeling other reduced-fat foods, which were adopted 5 years earlier.
