It is to prevent a lawsuit. You can reuse them, just sanitize them first. If they are easily squeezed, use about a 1/2 teaspoon of bleach and HOT water, make sure you wash the mouth of it inside and out. Rinse and, if you don't reuse right away, leave the lid off and let stand upside down until completely dry. If they are a strong plastic, like a gatorade 20 ounce bottle, you can put them in top rack of dishwasher. Always remember to sanitize the cap as well. Weak plastic bottles should be thrown out if they have any damage or discolorization or once a month.

True

I think that's a plot devised by the water companies you mention to deter you from refilling their bottles and using them as "free" water containers. I've been refilling our family's water bottles for months and only buy new ones when the container gets a big shabby looking.

There was an article on one of the current affair shows in Australia recently proving that refilling empty water containers with fresh water was not dangerous nor unhealthy in any way.

The chemicals in the plastic don't transfer into the water. If they did, then the pure water would be contaminated as at time of purchase.

Of course, it's best if you each keep to your own water bottle, and rinse it out before refilling.

I'd like to read the evidence of plastics contaminating water from those who have given me the thumbs down.

Your friend is right. Every time you reuse the plastic bottles the chemicals from the plastic end up in your beverage.

That IS bad.
Those bottles are vbery thin plastic, meant for one use.

Using them again makes the plastic chemicals start to break down, and those chemicals can leach into the liquid you refill them with....and make you sick.

Get yourself a refillable mug, and fill it with ice & water all day.

Avoiud the sports drinks & energy drinks....your body doesn't WANT or NEED them.

I reuse plastic water bottle all the time, but I have heard that you shouldn't leave it in the car, especially in direct sunlight. Drinking that type of water will harm you in the long run.

yes the chemicals break down and eventually you can get sick and even rarly you can get cancer from it!!

i refill ours all the time no problem

i heard that........

If the plastic in the bottle were to 'leach out' then the bottlers would be leaving themselves open for stacks of lawsuits. They have no control over their use after the original fluid is emptied, so they would make sure the plastics will hold up...Talk about urban legend heaven here....Really....
What you should NOT do is drink directly from the bottle then refill, if you intend to store them for a time. This can lead to formation of bacteria from your own germs. If you are going to use them immediately after filling, no problem. What you can do IF you are going to store them for a later use is clean them thoroughly or as I do pour the contents in a glass then refill as many ties as you like...
