Should you tip at coffee shops?!

Question: Answering your question with a question (and my opinion)...

What does the word 'tip' mean?

"The etymology of the word is in dispute, although the most oft-quoted story (and likely a spurious one) is that jars were conspicuously placed on the tables of 18th-century British coffeehouses "To Insure Promptitude" " (http://www.slate.com/id/2073161/)

If TIP means To Insure Promptitude...

...then I would tip them, making sure they see you put money into their TIP jar, so that they know to speed things up for you.

But, I agree with Steven Seagal, that it's a nice thing to do.

Maybe it should be called something else, like-- the goodwill jar.

And, I don't think you *should* tip. But, it's nice if you do and the barista always likes it. (I used to be a barista and it was nice when customers did tip you, but it was okay with me if they didn't.)

i guess

yes

Well you should if the coffee is good enough. I mean if the coffee taste like crap I wouldn't. It all depends.

yes lik a doller or 2

Depends on where you are. Check the receipt. Some already included 10% service charge so it's not really necessary. but some don't and if you really like the service it's customary (not mandatory) to tip 10%.

just like at any other place you eat at- 18%-20% and more if you feel it!!

this should help all of you!! get into the business nd you'll aal understand!!!

I tip because most employees in coffee shops (or restaurants) get paid less than minimum wage. They rely on their tips to make up the difference.

I'd say it's always in good taste to tip the person who serves you, as long as the service warrants it.

Especially at coffee shops that you are a regular at. There's probably a better chance they'll remember your venti triple-shot caramel macchiato the next time you stop in. Not all good service is money-motivated, yet it doesn't hurt to put a little sugar in their pot.

Hope this helps...happy tipping.

If its a good coffee then YES, however if its a bad coffee than NO.

If you go to the counter and pick up your own coffee, no.

If an employee brings you your coffee to your table, then yes, because that person performed a service for you.

I guess ..if you want to !

if you want to. it all depends on you. if you think they deserve that extra dollar just for making your drink, then ok, tip them. If not, then don't.

i think you should if you can tell the employees are trying to serve the customers. some don't...i know. but if they look like they're trying their best, then tip. i work retail and they could definitely use a pick-me-up...you know, as a 'thank you' to a seemingly thankless job that several certain customers overlook.

yeah you should. a dollar or two...

If you are a regular customer a tip now and then would be nice or even if you only stop in once in a while it would be good. People like to know they are appreciated for the job they do.

I do, at least. I leave my change in the jar. But my order is only $1.75.

No I don't think you should because of the price they charge. I paid £1.50 for a cup of coffee the other day, it had a few sprinklings of chocolate on. I could of bought a jar of coffee and a choc bar for that money. A tip NO

I would tip them if they are nice. It's always nice to help out them, Just think back if you ever did a job that involves commission

Only at my regular shop because the have to see my ugly mug so often.
