What's the secret to making a great cup of coffee?!

Question: I need my coffee in the morning sometimes. Most times it tastes good, but not excellent if I make it myself. Othertimes it tastes horrid. What's the trick for consistent great coffee?

Ok, if you are a 'normal' person, you already have your pot, which you keep clean, you have your choice of coffee, and you know how much to measure per your taste. Bottled water or tap water shouldn't make a difference, as bottled water is tap water. What you can do is add a pinch of table salt to your grounds. It will help remove the slight bitterness you can sometimes taste. Yes, it does work.

(let me do it!)

My mother always said that the secret to great coffee is the water used and the pot being as clean as possible. I clean mine at least weekly with a white vinegar and water combination. I run it through the coffee pot and then follow with a pot of clear water. Works ever time!

good quality coffee beans and grind them when ready to use.

use cold filtered water

The water need to be 190 degrees F, and the beans freshly ground. Too hot water gives bitterness. Overgrinding beans does too.

u shoul know ur taste and think what kind of coffee u want.then u can work according to that

The water shouldn't boil and if it did, let it stand for a couple of minutes before pouring. Boiled water gives the coffee a "burnt" taste. Make sure its real coffee, 100% and not chicory or other substitutes added.
If you have time, make filter coffee or keep some beans in an airtight container and grind just the bit you'll need when you feel like a coffee.
Personally I love it black and bitter [and strong!] but if you do the sugar and milk thing, use brown sugar and luke-warm milk. It will enhance the coffee flavour more than cold milk and white sugar does.

My father swears by Bunn coffee pots! His coffee is so much better than mine! It is the only difference in how we prepare it. We use good coffee and filtered water. I know when I first started making coffee (my hubby has to have it every morning) I had to make so many pots just to get the amount of grinds to put in with what amount of water! This is/can be a task all in itself. Good luck and happy coffee drinking!

Clean your pot & coffee maker regulary. The pot should be washed out daily. Every 2 weeks or so (depending on how much coffee you make, you should run white vinegar thru the machine then follow up with 3 or 4 runs of plain water.

Also, use fresh coffee-fresh beans ground as you need them if possible. If you buy ground coffee, store it in a food storage bag, then re-bag it in another food storage bag. I store the bag in my freezer, though some disagree. Measure the coffee grounds carefully. For my 6 cups in my coffee maker, I put in cold tap water over the 6 cup mark (about 1/2 way to the 8). I use 2 level & 1 slightly rounded scoop of coffee. Once it is brewed, drink ASAP or store in a thermos. Leaving coffee in the carafe on the burner burns the coffee.

Put creamer and sweetener in it, it cures all the bad coffee days.
