I grew up saying Pop, but in college all the kids teased me because they came from the 'big city' and said soda. I say soda a lot more now.

Your grandparents probably said both together, as in sodapop, unless they were specifically asking for a cocacola sodapop in which case they would have asked for a coca-cola soda-pop. Otherwise they would not have to ask if they went to a soda-pop fountain. This would usually start with punch, but by the end of an evening become a spiked soda-pop fountain punch.
Kids of today say the kind they want by its name. They are more lazy.
Health minded folks always ask for their specific brand but with diet in the front of the name.
So they would ask for a diet coca-cola soda-pop if they want a coca-cola soda pop.
