I bought my first tea infuser and I have a dumb question...?!

Question: what is the chain attached to the tea infuser for? I assumed it was to hang over the edge (much like the string on a tea bag), but the chain isn't nearly long enough for my teapot. Perhaps it would work in a teacup.....did I buy the wrong size tea infuser?

There's usually a little hook at the end of the chain that hangs on the side of the cup.

Diffusers are usually used in a cup not a tea pot, unless you prefer weak tea. To brew in a pot, use a strainer. You're supposed to add one teaspoon of lose tea per cup of boiling water in the pot, plus "one for the pot". If you have a small teapot that only holds two cups, then I guess you could use a diffuser, but if there's no hook, just let it sit in the pot and fish it our after you finih your tea.

Some teapots are made of metal and they have a piece shaped like a U on the bottom of the lid where you can hook the chain. If you have a ceramic pot you will not find this. You can just drop the infuser into the pot and use a spoon or fork to take it out later, or better yet a small sugar tongs.
