Hey Vegetarians/Vegans-Why did you go Veg ?!

Question: For me , DH got cancer and it freaked me right out. I started reading about factory farming, mad cow disease, Ecoli, salmonella and I couldn't blelieve what I was reading. At first I became veg for health reason, but now its a little of health, animal welfare and the environment. Your turn ! ?

I was 14 years old, and stumbled upon the Meet Your Meat video (the one playing here: http://www.meat.org ). I went veg overnight. Five years later, I saw a newspaper blurb about PETA and milk... researched the issues and decided to transition to veganism. My grandfather was a vegetarian, so maybe genes also has something to do with it!

I didn't like the taste. That was it really for me.

I became a vegetarian years ago because of a natural aversion to meat. I am more of an omnivore now. Having worked in very fine dining establishments for many years, it was important to know what I was selling for food and wine.
I have tried lots of things like calves brains, lamb kidneys, rabbit livers, foie gras, sea urchin, etc.
I eat mostly vegetarian and as much organic as possible, but when eating out will eat line caught or wild fish or shellfish, and once in a blue moon may order an organic free-range meat dish.
The only commitment I make is to never eat anything produced by large agri-businesses and to never eat "fast food"! I think when Madison Ave. dreamed up fast food, someone misspelled "fat food"!

a lot of religions require it

i went vegan coz i dont like to eat anything with a face!!! it is healthier....keeps u slimmer .....n it has more energy compared to non veg food!!!

I became veggie after visiting a pig farm.

I was 14, a meat-eater, and went to see a farm that had an open day because it had won awards. It was a model farm.

I saw aneamic pigs crammed into barns. These pigs would never see daylight in thier lives. I just thought what an appauling way to treat animals.

It that was the best the industry had to offer, i was having nothing to do with it. i left the farm as a vegetarian.

I realise many animals are not permanently caged indoors but since owning land and meeting farmers, visiting thier dairy and beef farms every week, I have learnt far more about the way animals are reared and treated and i still maintain that as supposedly the "top of the chain" animal, humans can do a lot more for other species than we do. We just abuse them for our own gain.

That was 28 years ago and I have seen nothing to change my mind.

Because after reading many intellectual advanced book I found out one solid truth:

We Are All Created Equally, Women, Men, Blacks, Whites, Animals, Humans.

animals shouldnt be raised to be killed.

For me it was most certainly for health, Dr told me if I was to get pregnant I'd most likely have a heart attack or lose the baby. After changing I've developed a new outlook for animals and think more about them and how they are treated.

i went vegetarian because i hate the taste of meat.
my mom would always make it and i would be eating it and chomp down a yucky piece of fat stuck in the meat!
IT WAS DISGUSTING!

I don't like loving my animals and condoning the cruelty and killing of others. Then as I learned more, I went vegan and now it's partially for health (and choosing animal-friendly junk instead ;))

I did it for the cool title of being called a vegan.

In previous posts Micheal h. said he became a vegetarian after visiting a slaughter house with his father. I don't think you can believe a word he/she says.

I freaked out when I was little and found out where it came from. The more I learned, the more I realized how much healthier it is for too many reasons to count. I also never really liked the taste, so it was no problem to stop eating it. The bottom line is I just don't think it's right to eat or wear your neighbors and no matter what delusions we humans try to cook up, we are still animals. Since we are smart enough to invent GoreTex and grow our own veggies, there's no excuse to continue being cannibals.

At first the meat was making me sick to my stomach and then the smell became disgusting. Then I found out what happens at meat packing factories and that sealed the deal. No more meat for me.

i never tried meat so i cant i dont like the taste but.....i felt sorry for the animals that had to die just for us and then they end up in the ocean. i feel sorry for them!
