Can vegetarians eat yogurt?!

Question: I'm thinking about becoming a vegetarian because I don't like seeing animals get tortured anymore. I'll probably go cold turkey for a while because I'm new to this so it's hard. I've been a meat eater and meat lover all my life. But now I feel a little uncomfortable & guilty when I eat a cheeseburger or anything that contains meat. I can probably give up meat, cheese, eggs, milk, and anything else that involves animals, but I don't know if I can give up yogurt (frozen too) and ice cream because I love them! Can I still eat yogurt? I can probably give up ice cream and substitute it for frozen yogurt because they taste the same, but yogurt is also dairy, so what to do? I've tried those soy ice cream and they're nasty so I'm never going to eat them again! Plus, one other problem is that I love this Thai curry chicken w/noodles dish and it's my favorite food but now I'm sad I have to let it go. I mean, I know I can eat it without the chicken but it wouldn't taste the same.

Yes, vegetarians can still eat dairy, vegans do not.
:)

Yes only vegans don't eat dairy and eggs. I am a vegetarian. Soy yogurt is good. Also tofu is a good meat substitute. You can eat meat once in a while if your body craves it- you can make your own rules.

Be sure if you do it that you are getting proper nutrients- vitamin E, iron, etc.

Vegetarians eat milk products and eggs. Vegan's don't eat any animal products. If you want to be vegetarian, as long as it never had a face, you can eat it. My husband is a partial vegetarian.... He has chicken once in a great while... maybe 4 times a year because he can't give it up.

If you are giving up meats though, make sure to put flax seed (ground) into a lot of the meals you make. This makes up for a lot of lost omega 3 from not eating fish. Nuts are also really good for the good cholesterol.

Stick to being an Omnivore.

You've given all the reasons why you are only thinking about being a veggie.

well it depends on how you look at it. some vegetarians don't eat yogurt or ice cream because it comes from cows(the milk).but if you don't mind the milk coming from cows then you can eat it.

Vegetarians can eat whatever they want. They CHOOSE not to eat meat. Some CHOOSE to not eat dairy.

Veggies do Vegans don't.
Please tell me why do people with food fetishes try to make everyone else feel guilty?

Yes you can eat yogurt as long as you aren't a vegan than you can eat eggs and dairy products and as long as they are vegetarian safe foods you can. And it is fine to eat things like that as long as you have a well balanced diet. But if you don't want dairy products you could just try fruit based onces or sorbets for desserts and non-dairy foods that can be used for a substitute.

VEGETARIANS can eat eggs and/or dairy, although egg-laying hens and dairy cows are treated just as badly as other livestock. If you are truly concerned with the welfare of these animals, but still want to eat dairy, choose brands that are cruelty free. Check your local health food store, farmer's markets, even your grocery store may have some options.

VEGANS eat no animal products whatsoever, even honey.

I have recently had to give up dairy due to health reasons, and I consider myself pretty lucky that I like soy milk. A lot of people don't. But as for soy ice cream, seriously - try some different brands and flavours! Some are wretched but there really are some good ones out there!

Good luck!

Edit to add: Can someone please let me know why I got 2 negative ratings? What I've said is 100% true. If not then please correct me as I truly don't like to be ignorant.

you can eat it i your a vegetarian just not a vegan. plus, the only one who controls what you eat is you,

Um... I just found out ALOT of yogurts have gelatin in them. (it's made from animals). So just look for yogurt that says NO GELATIN!

lol,

Mail me if you need anymore ideas or suggestions! Hope I helped.

Makayla~

It's perfectly normal to feel sad about giving up your favorite foods. My feelings went beyond just being sad- I became very depressed. It's been about 9 months for me now, and I've pretty much come to grips with what I've given up. Most of my old faves tastes just as good without the meat- even meatball subs and donairs! There definitely will be sadness, but that will eventually pass.
As a vegetarian you can eat eggs/dairy if you choose. I do. In an ideal world I'd be vegan, but I'm not ideal, and neither is my world, so for now I'm a vegetarian. You can still have your ice cream and yogurt. If soy products weren't so disgusting, I would already be vegan. :)

Vegetarianism and yogurt were both invented in India. Hindu vegetarians usually eat yogurt; it's considered a dietary staple.

Check the ingredients though, some flavored yogurt contains gelatin (made from animal skins and bone). "Kosher gelatin" is usually made from fish bones.

you're choice to go veggie isn't going to change anything about meat eaters or animal "rights", remember that.

at my local healthfood store it is called akins, they have all cruelty-free and hormone-free meat and stuff that i get.

they let the chickens and cows go free range before they kill them and they do it quickly and without pain, which some of the others boil chickens alive, but they don't do that.

dairy cows are free range and fed good grains and stuff and not other cows so they are healthier and they are milked but they don't have to stay in the big metal shed all the time or be treated badly and stuff.

one good, safe one of these meat brands is applegate farms.

a good, safe ice cream brand is stonyfield farms.

a good, safe milk brand is horizon organic.

a good tasting strictly vegetarian brand is amy's, if you still plan to go strictly veg.

but you can have eggs, butter, milk, basically everything you eat now if you'll lookup those brands, they have websites on the internet, and you can read about how much better they treat the animals than these regular ''wal*mart'' places do.

If you are a vegan you can't eat dairy because milk-(cows)
but you can be a vegetarian and eat that stuff.
I am thinking of becoming vegetarian too for the same reason
It is your choice to do this so there aren't any laws. You can really eat what ever you want.
Usually vegetarians/vegans don't get enough protein so it is good to eat one option of meat or have a lot of beans and soymilk.
Good For you i love animals and it is great that people can stand up for something like this.

Not all animals are tortured, you should not feel bad for eating what God put on the Earth to be eaten. If you want to be vegetarian that's fine, but don't feel bad if you eat a burger, there are much bigger things to be concerned about.

Vegetarians don't eat meat or slaughter by-products like rennet (used to coagulate cheese) or gelatin (which turns up in many unexpected places.) Diary products and eggs are a judgement call for each vegetarian. If you give up eggs, but still eat some dairy, then you are a lacto-vegetarian. The thing you have to watch for with yogurt is gelatin, but there are brands without it.

The chicken curry is just something that has to go if you're vegetarian. It's the sauce and seasonings that give curries their flavor, though, and you can make it without chicken altogether or with "faux chicken" and it will taste just as good. You just have to decide for yourself which means more to you: tasty chicken curry or your desire to be vegetarian. You don't *have* to go 100% in either direction; you could reduce your meat consumption to just something you do occassionally. It's OK. It's not vegetarian and you wouldn't want to call yourself one, but it's still a valid choice it it's what works best for you. But, if you really feel that not contributing to harming animals is that important to you, then it's not that hard to give up a few favorite dishes.

(Edit to add: there are definitely some bad soy ice creams out there, but there are some good ones also. Purely Decadent chocolate peanut butter is soooo good. Not that you have to try them, just saying...)

soy yogurt is really good.
Different brands use different combinations of enzymes to make a different flavour, so try some.

Lots of fake meats out there.
Really good fake meats in the Asian community.

Some pretty good fake vegan cheeses out there these days.

eggs as an ingredient are easy to switch with something else.

tonnes of alternatives to milk

Lots of vegan ice creams out there. Some I find to be better than the regular dairy kind.
