Cultured meat??!

Question: I was doing a quick search to answer another question and I stumbled on this site:
http://www.new-harvest.org/faq.htm

Apparently they think cultured meat is going to be a phenomenon, especially for vegetarians and vegans. My thoughts are how on earth did they come to this conclusion to think not only that meat grown in a lab is appealing and more healthy than the real deal, but how they think that it's going to all of a sudden change the minds of vegetarians and vegans and convince us to accept meat at all...

Any thoughts? Does this sound like something you'd find appealing?

Who on earth thinks that veggies would want to eat lab grown meat ?

Lets see them introduce it to the market if they are so sure we want it

i like the way this organisation describes meat, veggies have been saying this for years so its nice to see a meat research company have it on thier website:

....raising farm animals in intensive confinement systems, injecting them with synthetic hormones, and feeding them artificial diets made up of antibiotics and animal wastes. At the same time, the conventional production of meat has led to a number of unnatural problems, including high rates of ischemic heart disease and foodborne illness, as well as soil and water pollution from farm animal wastes.

talk about shooting themselves in the foot !!

I wouldn't buy that.
And the cells come from animals....so how CAN it be suitable for vegetarians and especially vegans??

As Salaamu Alaykum

I think that is crazy. I'm not a vegetarian in fact I like to eat meat.

Ma'a Salaamah

ewww.

This has to be one of the more interesting concepts that i have heard in a long time. It seems as though there is a long long way to go between where they are right now and having a consumer product, let alone one that people would trust and enjoy. The benefits of something like this actually working are numerous, and they mention several, but it just doesnt seem right, does it? Also it seems like any time that the natural variations of food are limited, and one would assume that in this model that they would be very limited, there are unforeseen consequences that are both unhealthy and unnatural. It is hard to imagine this ever being a healthy and viable alternative to meat, it is hard to imagine successfully marketing it to anyone (let alone vegans and vegetarians,) its just plain hard to imagine in general. But it is very interesting.

It would allow those who don't eat meat from an animal cruelty standpoint the choice to eat meat if they'd want to. Sounds kinda creepy but a lot of the stuff on the market today was created in a lab too.

Perhaps, if meaters found the taste the same as the meat they eat now, they would choose that meat over having meat from slaughtered animals.

l do not find this appealing at all. It is creepy.
It just strikes me as so unnatural, far beyond the baking of bread, as they used in their example. I think the trend right now is towards whole, fresh foods not lab-created foods. I don't see this as being something that is going to be the next big thing anytime soon. I can, however, see this being something meat-eating people resort to in the future when they finally get enough evidence to show that the modern meat industry IS contributing very drastically and negatively to the environment.

I'd eat it. I went vegetarian because it's a means to reducing animal suffering...not because I dislike the taste of meat. If cultured meat could prevent billions of animals from experiencing miserable lives and suffering brutal deaths, why not support it?

This is probably one of the creepiest things I've ever heard.

Totally NOT appealing in the slightest let alone edible. Of course, I can't see that it would be much worse for us than most of the processed foods sold in supermarkets.

Gross

Someone that eats cultured meat is neither vegan nor vegetarian.

Came upon this very website not too long ago. I think it MIGHT appeal to those who are vegetarians solely for environmental purposes... It doesn't look like there are any negative global effects on this type of production. Not yet at least.

Personally, it doesn't appeal to me because 1) the cultured meat is produced from cells of a farm animal and 2) I simply don't like meat anymore.
