I only have $20 for groceries this week, what should I get?!

Question: I'm a vegetarian, and I only have twenty dollars to spend this week on food in order to pay off my rent (thanks to a certain hospital bill). Does anyone have any idea on what to get aside from instant ramen?

Buy a bag of pasta, 1lb tofu type stuff, a couple cans of tomatoes and if you already have spices you can make a good few meals out of that.
Throw in a loaf of bread, maybe some milk - you'll be surprised at what concoctions you can come up with on a budget!

Edit: Oy, Peter above this answer, don't be a prick. Some people don't like it up the ***, but we don't judge you.

boxed falafel, canned chickpeas to make a big batch of hummos, pita bread...

A second job.

Get dried beans (don't forget to soak them overnight and disguard the beans that are floating in the morning), onions, canned tomatoes, carrots, celery chicken stock and rice. You can make a stew that will last all week.

well canned foods arent that expensive corn adn beans, or at sams club you can buy a 16 pack of veggie boca burgers, for about 12-16 bucks, then buy buns with the rest of your money, and im sure you have ketchup and all. or go to parties so you wont have to buy groceries. maybe?

canned corn, boxed frozen vegetables at albertsons and walmarts are like $1 each. you can buy generic potato chips, frozen dinners are usually a $1 you can get lasagna with cheese sauce(i dunno if you eat cheese or not), pita bread, lettuce head and some dressing that would last you a few days

Hi i'm a chef here in northern california, maybe i can help. I am assuming you are vegetarian and can cook? hopefully? if you can cook hopefully you want to ? Unprocessed unprepared ingredients are your best bets. go to a supermarket that has bins of dried groceries such as beans lentils quinoa millet and similiar things. 20 bucks wont go far today. tortillas are good and filling. look for green tea bags.
raw produce such as bulk fruit oranges, fresh greens, brussel sprouts, potatoes, sweet potatoes, yams, bananas this time of year. don't buy organic usuallly its too exspensive. miso paste is healthy and cheap. there is a lot to be said for a fresh tomato with salt and pepper or sliced with olive oil and vinegar. Sometimes if i'm really poor i'll just have hot water and lemon juice with a teasponn of cayenne. read the newspaper, look for sales , roast squash or pumpkin is filling and satisfying. I hope this helps good luck and god bless. oh yeah steamed rice too lol

Beans, rice, tortillas

Good luck!

peanut butter, crackers, apples, cheese, yogurt or milk, fresh veggies or bagged salad, tortillas

tinned bake beans, packet of lentils, onions, tinned tomatoes, bread, pasta, miso soup mix. You may have other staples at home which will mean you might need as much.

Plenty of canned things!
you should be able to find some cheap baked beans, spaghetti, chick peas, lentils, borlotti beans ect.
Then get a few cheap cans of tomatoes and some cheap pasta. You should be able to get a few different cheap meals out of them! try pasta and tomato with beans,a bean mix by mashing cooked beans and making a paste for a sandwhich or stirfry, make a soup from some of these.

another thing that is really good is a powdered stock that you can add to make soup, this will last a long time and should be fairly cheap, you can make heaps from it!.

and lastly, try going to the markets at the end of the day, they usually have cheap vegies and fruits on offer.

tofu, frozen chineese veggies and brown rice, also cheap tomatoe sauce & pasta, some apples, milk

You can get big sacks of dried beans for $20. Happy vegging!!!

Rice, black beans, salsa, peanut butter, oatmeal, veggies

The line of Amy's food has canned soup, about 2 or 3 dollars each. Most are vegan, and they are really good.

Good luck with the hospital bill, I owed over 6grand and finally got that taken care of. It had nothing to do with being vegan, this was 2 years ago and hopefully your hospital visit wasn't related to your eating habits.
Mine was due to NOT eating.

20 bucks eh ?

Been there done that !!

This will help -

$20...Not much for a whole week.... but if you don't mind eating the same thing every day...this should work, and is super healthy.

4 onions
Garlic
2 cans pinto beans
2 cans black beans
2 cans corn
2 large cans tomato puree
small can tomato paste
Chili powder
Cumin

Veggie chili

Chop onions and garlic
Saute onions and garlic 10 minutes
Add tomatoes, 1tbs chilie powder, 2 tbs cumin 1 tbs tomato paste and let simmer 10 minutes
Add all the beans and corn
If it seems too thick, add a bit of water
let simmer for 40 minutes
Add a bit of salt if you like

use a BIG pot...this is double the recipe I usually make, so it will be a LOT of food! You can also add a bell pepper and jalepeno if you like, but it's not necessary!

You could also just get a bunch of tortillas, a bunch of canned refried beans and some salsa and eat burritos. Get some peanut butter too...you can put it on the tortillas for breakfast

Here is an emergency shopping list for $45, but that's for 2-4 people and I am assuming this is just for you, so you should be able to play with it a bit to get it to $20! Also, this lady does carry many vegetarian and vegan recipes for you to look through on the following link!

get rice and some meat

spaghetti and chicken goes forever and is the longest lasting thing you can get for your buck. Thats the only way to get through college baby! but seeing as how you are a vegetarian... i duno. a few heads of lettuce?

~Peace~

TunaFish.....or don't you weirdos eat that, either......?

stop bein so damn picky on what you eat and buy some cheap food that can be microwaved you damn vegan

maybe if you ate meat you wouldnt have hospital bills...duh...jk

rice nuts noodles mac ncheese

no leftovers from thanksgiving huh? u must not be very popular if u didnt get invited to someone's meal, and take leftovers home. even vegans should eat turkey and ham 2wice a year! my sister tried to pull that "im a vegan or vegetarian" crap on my mom and she put her butt STRAIGHT! she said "ur eating EVERYTHING with all of us or u can get out of my house and dont come back!" so my sister listened to her, and ate everything. the point im making is, its ok to eat meat once in a while if thats what u have to do to survive. its not going to kill u to go against your beliefs or whatever once in a while.

I THOUGHT VEGGIES ARE HEALTHY? WHATS UP WITH THE HOSPITAL?????????//
