How to get over a cilantro aversion?!

Question: I hate cilantro. Even if I pick it out of a dish, I can usually taste it which ruins the entire dish. It is a very strong distaste. I understand this reaction is hereditary. Is there any way to train my palette to enjoy cilantro? I want to enjoy as many foods as I can.

You can't change how your taste buds process tastes. Cilantro tastes soapy to many people. I used to be as sensitive to it as you. Eating a lot of it will not change your sensitivity, but getting older will decrease your sensitivity. Learn to enjoy other foods.

That's too bad, I love Cilantro, and hope you learn to like it too. It's one of the best flavors in a dish.

My guinea pig loves it too.

I hate it too; the smell turns my stomach and I've heard you either love it or hate it.....

Cilantro is just one herb... if you hate it then don't eat it.. you won't miss much really

I too suffer from cilantro hatred.

I've read it's a mild allergy to cilantro. You might want to try using coriander (cilantro) seed instead - I like the flavour of the seed rather than the leaves.

I've tried eating it a few more times, hoping I can taste that 'lemony' flavour that everyone else seems to, but it still just tastes rotten and soapy. I just pick it out of my meals, or ask the servers to go easy on it.

Mmm...I love cilantro and onions on my tacos. My husband is not a big fan of the stuff, but I love it. I usually only use it in recipes where it gets overpowered by other flavors (likes salsa and soups) and even then I don't use very much at all. Some people do tend to go overboard. If you genuinely don't like the stuff I don't know that you can "cure" yourself of that. Maybe meditate with some crushed leaves nearby, breathing in the scent and trying to associate the smell (and thereby the taste) with something soothing and relaxing? Most things are mind over matter, after all.

I love every type of Latin food, but I cannot stand the taste of cilantro either!

Sometimes it is okay in a dish - lightly...

It tastes like dish soap to me...yuck!`
