  • Because people are hypocrites. Simple as.

I think it's because the slaughter of the cow leads to meat that we eat, not JUST killing the animal for it's pelt, like is done for furs....I've never heard of anyone eating mink or chinchilla.

For the same reason they think killing animals is bad but eating hamburguers is not.

because little old ladys wear fur.

    And Motorcycle (bikers) wear leather.

Nobody in his right mind is going to piss off a biker.

    because people are fools...

Interesting. My wolfdogs (non-vegetarians) like their fur just fine. They also like leather too (they have chewed up both gloves and shoes when they get their teeth on them).

because most animals have a*s fur so the leather less reminds them of it

A cow is pretty much entirely used when it is killed, so as nothing is really wasted people think that is ok, with leather and suede being a by-product of the cow.
Killing an animal just for the fur on its back is deemed acceptable by some (not me!), but many see this as cruel and a waste as no other part of the animal is used. I'm unsure whether a deeper meaning a what is socially acceptable comes into this. It is socially acceptable for cows to be killed, nobody thinks "oh poor cow, this is wrong" and the same goes for pigs and sheep too. But when the subject of cute furry animals comes up, such as rabbits and chinchillas, it is instantly deemed unacceptable and those who buy and wear the fur are condemned straight away. Is it that cows aren't cute and cuddly, but rabbits are and that is what it is all about? It is all hypocrisy at the end of the day.

Because the PETA demonstrators who splash red paint all over the fur coats that models wear down runways. Most non-vegetarians listen or watch the news and see this. The media doesn't show any demonstrations against leather goods, thus leather is not bad. This illustrates just how much our education is from the media lately.

Esoterically speaking, fur looks like the animal, while leather looks not like the animal in anyway shape or form. Just like kids who think the "beef" they had for dinner comes from the supermarket and not the cow they petted at the farm field trip they went on that day. You try telling them that and they usually end up crying!

Because they are morons, and being influenced by whacko-animal rights people, rather than thinking logically about the use of animals for food and clothing.

The real question to ask is why do some people think that animals are equal in value to humans? That is not to suggest that animals shouldn't be treated humanely, but to equate their value with human life is foolish and insulting to humans.

Just for the record, I am not a vegetarian and I would totally wear fur if I could afford it...which is where I think a lot of this anti-fur motivation comes from. I think it's ultimately just a bunch of jealous people who can't afford fur and get angry at those who can. When people try to alter stranger's lifestyles by forcing their views on the general public, it's usually because of class envy and jealousy. Do not be deceived!

I'm don't understand this either but I do know that fur, leather, wool, silk, down are all obtained in ways that cause much suffering to animals.

If someone is going to abstain from wearing fur, they should abstain from wearing anything made from animals.

Note: I just added very detailed information about leather on my website. Feel free to check it out, see the "For Fashion" page.

A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds... Ralph Waldo Emerson.

Cause when they see fur they think of the soft and cute animal that once used to be..with leather they most likely see it as rubber..I think fur and leather are wrong..the smell of leather makes me want to vomit unless its fruit leather..then I eat it

I used to think it was hypocritical until I found out how the fur is obtained. In the case of leather, it's a by-product. The animals are slaughtered and then their skin is removed. With fur, it's a different story. They want the skins/furs to be intact (no holes or tears) so the animals aren't killed beforehand and are skinned alive. Just imagine someone tearing off all your skin from your feet to your head all while you were still alive!

Here's just one of the many videos which shows the reality of obtaining fur. It's not for the faint hearted and I was in a state after watching it but it definitely will make you see why fur is much worse than leather:

Just for the record, I would consider fur and leather to be just as bad as eachother if the animals were killed in the same way. It doesn't matter whether the rest of the animal is 'wasted' if it's just killed for it's fur... I'm sure the animal wouldn't care that it's flesh wasn't eaten as well as it's fur being used. I see eating meat and wearing fur as the same thing... they're both for pleasure. I do however think fur is much worse only because of the suffering involved to obtain it... it's much crueler to skin an animal alive than it is to send it to a slaughterhouse where it will have a (hopefully) relatively quick and painless death... although in a lot of cases this basic right isn't even granted to them.

Because leather is at least a byproduct of the beef industry. Cows are slaughtered for their meat and the hide is made into leather. Fur, on the other hand, is not a byproduct. Mink and their furry cousins are killed for their fur and oils. If you're eating cows it's pretty easy to justify using the rest of the animal, but much harder to rationalize wearing the fur of dozens of animals killed solely for that purpose.

i'm a vegetarian and i'm against fur and leather.

    hmm... this was said

just like to point out, research says that vegetarians / vegans are normally the upperclass...
so i think they can afford it :)

but for my thoughts, its more due to leather is a by product, whilst fur is the reason for the animals death...
also, in alot of places, killing the animal will cost more money, so they literally skin it alive...
    not nice.

    I don't have a problem with either.

Without leather I wouldn't have my belt or shoes.

    Without fur, I wouldnt' have...
    hmm...
I don't actually own anything made with fur, unless my wool suits count...

Darkwolf makes a good point. Look down the high street next time you are out. It will be full of vegetarians in bare feet with their trousers falling down!?!?!?!?!?!?

The only thing that makes fur worse then leather, IMO, is the waste issue. Most fur animals are only used for the fur, while most of the animals we get leather from are also used for food and what not. Of course, I see nothing wrong with using fur or leather, the real stuff is far superior to the fake stuff, but that is the only issue I have with fur vs. leather.

    Most normal people like both.

most?? how did you arrive at that conclusion? any empirical data to back that up? because unless you can, your question is not valid..

ps i don't find either "bad" and nobody that i know does..
