Vegetarians: what do you feed your dog/cat?!
Answers: Being Veg maybe even Vegan you avoid meat but your pet...
I am a vegetarian&used to have a dog and even though I am totally against killing animals, I don't think it's fair to deprive animals of what they are supposed to eat - meat. They are animals and carnivores, and I don't think I should enforce that on them, I decided to be a vegetarian, my dog didn't!
It definitely isn't fair..
Even though I felt guilty about buying it!
Here is a list of what 3 of my vegetarian friends feed their animals:
1)Eukanuba
2) Eukanuba
3) Science Diet
the rest don't have pets
I'm vegetarian. I feed my cats regular cat food for now. I have considered vegetarian food for them but it is more expensive and sometimes harder to find --- locally. I really got scared with all the recalls they had on pet food but so far we've been lucky -- knocks on wood. Although I'm for feeding them vegetarian food, I do think cats need to eat traditional cat food to make sure they get the nutrients that they need.
Note to all: DON'T BUY IAMS pet food. IAMS tests on animals causing injuries and death. Don't buy while dogs and cats die.

Do Vegans have pets?
Some animals require meat to survive...
Addendum: Cats require meat to survive..
Hello,
We used to have dog when i was a kid (in India). We used to feed it Rice with milk, Bread and milk and once or twice in a week 2 boiled eggs. (I am a vegetarian)
I buy commercial pet food for both my cat and my ferret. They are both carnivores and have to have meat to survive, even though I don't.
I just need to add that being a vegetarian doesn't take away my need for the companionship of my pets. I have severe arthritis and am in a wheelchair, so my cat and ferret are vital to my mental well being. They keep me company when I can't get out of the house and its been proven that petting a cat or dog can lower your blood pressure.
I've only been a vegetarian for a short while, so I haven't had a lot of time to research diet needs for my cat and ferret, I only know that they need considerably more protein than humans do.
Yes he eats what i eat plus vitamins and minerals.
I feed them what (I assume) they like; dog and cat food. I dont push my beliefs on anyone else; including my dog or cat.
Now, if they came to me one day and told me that they would like to start a vegetarian diet, I would be all for it (however, since they can't talk in a language I could understand, I doubt that situation will ever present itself to me).
Are you implying somthin here or trying to start an argument?
I dont like when people do that; they always terrorize the vegetarian/vegan section. Why is that?
All of us aren't total wackos.
Ciao!
Im a vegan and I feed my cat organic cat food that I get and Whole Foods.
Vegans dont have pets! Also if they have please give them freedom to feed! Dont be a master of them. they are not a slave! Offcource! You can help any animal who are meatarion or vegan in their bad times. But whenever they are healthy please free them to their natural envronment as you live too!
Well I think as we are ultimately vegans then carnivorous animals are also a natural carnivorus for balance of the environment. So love them but not interfair in their own life as you think about yours!!!
So please recognize everyone about this answer to improve the humanity, health and environment!
God blase You of all!

I feel pretty confident that if someone really put enough effort into a vegan dog & cat diet it could be done, but it would require a lot of education in pet nutrition and you would have to be diligent about making sure he or she got exactly what they need. Cows and pigs and chickens and fish get their flesh to be nutritious by eating plant foods. It would make sense that you could go straight to the source and get those same nutrients, however, i imagine that the pet wouldn't like it much and it would seem pretty unnatural. I don't think most people pay enough attention to their own diet; I wouldn't want to trust them to get a specialized vegan pet diet right.
I am on the complete opposite of the spectrum with what I feed my cat. He gets almost all meat. I feed my cat Innova Evo by Natura. It doesn't contain any grains - it's all animal and veggies. It is more convenient than a raw diet (for me), but is supposed to have a lot of the same benefits. They use meat that is "safe for human consumption" (not that that says a whole lot - most meat is pretty gross before it gets nicely wrapped in plastic). I like their policies on animal testing (you can read about it here: http://www.naturapet.com/tools/faqs.asp?... ). Of all the companies out there that put out pet food I trust them the most. And my cat loves it. It sure did make his crap super stinky at first, though.
I'm vegetarian, my cats aren't. :)
As I've said before, I have no right to NOT feed my cats what they need. The smell of cat food is disgusting though.
Right now my cats eat an organic food that is locally made called Pro Series.
I feed my dog and cat Innova Evo. I may be an herbivore but they aren't
Since our domestic pets are natural hunters and carnivores and their intestinal tracts are set up to consume meat, I feed my pets what is best for them. My dog gets Timberwolf Elk & Salmon and my cats get Wellness food.
