Kill and eat....?!

Question: I have been vegetarian (the fish eating type) for 4 years now. However, I still think that it is ok to eat animals as long as you do the deed and kill it yourself. We are top of the food chain after all. I am strongly against factory farming and only eat woodland, freerange organic eggs and such because of it. I don't eat meat because I don't have to and don't want to, but do eat fish because I feel I need it and know I could catch it, kill it, gut it and cook it. Sooo - - I was just wondering - is this a common feeling or am I all alone ??? I

i know what you mean. if a meat eater had to catch and kill then he would live on carrots etc. there are meat eating chefs such as hugh fearnley whittingstall who cares deeply about the welfare of animals and i agree with his thinking. i dont want to eat meat but for anyone that does at least give a bit of thought to the way their meat is reared.

In my opinion, I would feel MORE guilty killing an animal on my own and then cooking it. Fish on the other hand I feel the same way that you feel. I would like to know where it came from and have it be as fresh as possible.

I don't really see how you can be a vegetarian and still eat meat. I mean, the definition is pretty clear on that part.

I feel kind of that way. I don't think its kind to kill animals, of course, but I do believe that anyone who chooses to eat meat should kill the animal themself. Watch them die and realize that they were once alive, it brings a kind of respect, even if the person continues to eat meat. If they can still eat the animal, I can not protest them doing so. But I do believe that if everyone were given the choice of having to kill their own meat, there would be alot more vegetarians.

there is probably others who think the same.

I used to be vegetarian but started eating meat, I dunno why.

Let's get this straight.

One should only eat meats if one kills and cleans the animal oneself.

But you can eat fish from the market because you COULD catch and clean it, not that you DID do that.

So ... if I KNOW HOW to kill and butcher an animal, it's ok to eat meat from the market because I know how to do it if I have to... ??

fish is meat

I was a veggie for 16 years, but although I watched my diet very carefully, I wasn't getting everything I needed from it, so I started eating meat again. I couldn't kill anything myself to eat, because I don't really agree with killing to eat, I just don't want to be unhealthy. I can't eat things that still look like an animal, such as a chicken leg, or boiled bacon with the veins in.
And if people stopped to think (religious, Christian), in the bible, it says thou shalt not kill - it doesn't say thou shalt not kill except to eat something else that has a right to live....

It's sort of primeval.

Peace on Earth
by C. David Coats

Isnt' man an amazing animal? He kills wildlife, birds, kangaroo, dee, all kinds of cats, coyotes, beavers, groundhogs, mice, foxs and dingos by the millions in order to protect his domestic animals and their feed.

Then he kills domestic animals by the billions and eats them. This in turn kills man by the millions because eating all these animals leads to degenerative and fatal health conditions like heart disease, kidney disease and cancer.

So then man tortures and kills millions more animals to look for cures for these diseases.

Elsewhere, millions of other human beings are being killed by hunger and malnutrition because food they could eat is being used to fatten domestic animals.

man, who kills so easily and so violently and once a year sends out cards praying for Peace On Earth.

If your going to eat meat then i belive that it should be slaughtered safley, professionaly and humanely not a DIY at home method as you suggest can you imagine the inner cites as around dinner time hundreds of thousands of people on the doorsteps making attempts to kill animals.. It would be very Gruesume, Unhygenic and Impractical.

u should not because u would not be a vegetrian IT`S STILL THE SAME AS FACTORIES KILLING HARMLEES ANIMALS

"As long as Man continues to be the ruthless destroyer of lower living beings he will never know health or peace. For as long as men massacre animals, they will kill each other. Indeed, he who sows the seed of murder and pain cannot reap joy and love

- Pythagoras"

Sorry its just hypotyicial (sp) to say this has you say that you eat fish. It seems its a case of do as you say and not do as you do.

Anyway back to the question, you question falls flat then asked to hunters, they know how to hunt and kill an animal for food, so they would be aright if they could only eat what they kill.

Right lets just set all the cows free into the wild see what happens!! Your not totally alone I'm sure somebody in the world feels like you do but not many.

While I respect your choice not to eat animals (apart from fish), I feel your 'eat only what you kill' philosophy is a non-starter.
I eat meat. I could kill an animal to eat but there are problems with that. Where do I find my free range wild animal in modern times. There are none roaming my town centre. (Actually there might be but I understand eating dog and cat is frowned upon). Let's say I track down my bull, I am not skilled at killing animals so it is going to suffer more at my hands than it would if killed swiftly by a professional. But let's imagine it has been killed as humanely as possible .... I'm stuck with a dead bull! What on earth am I going to do with that much meat? I want a burger or a steak. What do I do with the rest? It won't fit in my freezer (which is full of frozen vegetables anyway). Do I leave it to rot? It would make sense to let my friends and neighbours have some of this valuable food resource ..... trouble is we can only eat what we kill ourselves. So, do they go out to kill their own bull? Will we all leave rotting carcasses lying around? It doesn't sound good. Then someone comes up with this great plan: why don't we farm beef, kill the animals as humanely as possible when necessary and share the food out between whoever needs it, maybe selling it through a butchers shop so people only buy what they need. I think it's a winner of an idea.

Edit: That Pythagoras .... wasn't he the founder of the cockroach, rodent and bacterium liberation front?

I agree with veganjack..........

I also find the excuses for Humans desire to kill and eat barbaric, arrogant and sick... Animals were not created for mankind's amusement and we do not need meat to survive.. The majority of animals are herbivores, does that not tell us something? Plus we have choice, where does that leave us morally?..........

I couldn't eat meat no matter how it's "packaged" so.... I am not a fan of hunting/fishing either...so...I'm not with you. I totally get what your saying though...I'm just not with you. Sorry...your alone over here. I just don't see any reason to go hunt or eat meat...for any reason...to me it can't be justified by saying it lived almost all it's life how it was designed to..I think all animals should live out their whole lives not half...sorry. I'm not a fan of animals dying for humans as a food source or for any other reason for that matter.

I am also a strong believer that we are not at the top of the food chain. We would be if we could go against another top predator..like a lion..and win barehanded. We canot barehanded..we have to use weapons..so......I don't agree that we are at the top. We are there by default...and that's just not the same to me.

If that came across mean...it was not supposed to...sometimes you cannot tell emotions in writing so..I'll tell you... It was not meant as disrespectful either. Each thier own...difference is the "flavor" in life to me.

The fact that the great majority of humans in this planet are meat eating or omnivores should tell you, you are not alone.

I think that you are alone.

I don't understand how we are on the top of the food chain. Personally, I think lions and tigers and bears are on the top of the food chain. Whoever made the food chain is seriously stupid. If I could remake the food chain, I'd put us at the bottom.

Vegetarians don't eat fish.

Fish is not the sole source of any essential or beneficial nutrient.

if you are way past that stuff then why do u eat fish and why are you thinking its ok to kill it and then eat it since we are on the top of the food chain? why not eat more meat i mean we are all humans and on the top so they juss killing animals while we eat them right? your not way ahead of that stuff buddy you got alot to learn
