Do not read if you find the death of any animals sickening.?!
OK how much meat does the average ani... cra... er no.
Ok my flatmate bought home 2 live crabs, for like 1 dollar, the other day to cook them (please dare in mind, I'm living in China, my flatmate is out of work and is living on something like 1-2 dollars a day, being vegan is fine, but in china veg*n stuff costs money)
She was p*ssing about on how to kill them and I told her to do it quickly as it was not fair on them, she is likely to buy more crabs in future. In the end she threw them into the boiling water.
What is the most humane way to kill these kill these things. I read somewhere that if you slowly heat water to boiling or stream them that you will not feel any pain but will pass out peacefully long before death happens.
So what are the choices.
a) Drop them straight into boiling water.
b) Slowly raise the water to boiling with them in it.
c) Knife through the vital areas.

Best bet: put them into the freezer for 20 minutes to half an hour. They'll fall asleep and go into a coma.
Second best: drop them straight into the boiling water. It will kill them very quickly. Not instantly, but better than your
Third best: slowly raising the water to boiling? Eek! Of COURSE they're going to feel the water getting hotter and hotter. They'll pass out before they die, probably, but that will be after at least a few minutes of being very, very uncomfortable. Remember that they're cold-blooded animals.
As for the knife, it's good if you know what you're doing and can do it fast. You need to have a very sharp knife and absolute confidence. You don't want to wound it or send it skidding across the countertop.
Freeze them.
do the one were they don't feel any pain. good luck!!!
Why wouldn't you just ask this in the general food section? It's definitely not vegetarian, and I'm sure you'll have a much better chance of getting an answer from people who do it. Good luck.
eta: ok then.. um... this method, I guess: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xSidZCSsY... although It doesn't look too humane... but I'm sure you don't actually care about that ;)
Well, I wouldn't define any type of killing as strictly humane, but.... cutting with a very sharp knife right between the eyes, all the way down the spinal cord - that's how a French chef did it on TV... he said that was what an animal rights advocacy group taught him.
I'd do it quickly via C, if that's the best way you know how. It sounds quick and they're dead right away i.e. not prolonged and painful. I don't know how else you could do it???
I'm vegan and AR so I believe that if you're going to kill them do it humanely. I hate the thought of lobsters being boiled alive. It can't feel good, it just can't. Or if they're going to kill cows, to actually stun them the right way so they are actually unconscious and DON'T see their friends on the assembly line being killed and freak out and get so much adrenaline in the meat ... etc. C. is my answer.
Scientists have proven that crabs, shrimps, lobsters and other crustaceans do not feel pain as they lack the necessary nervous sytsem for pain transmittal to the brain. But if you are squeamish about such things, best way is to get a nail or something similar and puncture the crab/lobster/ in the area behind and between the eyes. Shrimp, crayfsh you can just drop on a pot of rapidly boiling water and they will almost be instantly cooked (when they turn pink or red)
By "vital area", I assume you mean the brain, since anything else will take a relatively long time to cause death.
This probably won't be used by anyone anytime soon, but the most humane method is probably dropping them into liquid nitrogen. It has a temperature of -196 degrees C, enough to flash freeze a crab-sized object in a second or two. OK, getting back to your question, I'd say C. B is even more ridiculous than A.
exsft,
on the contrary, I've found veggies, rice, beans, etc most expensive in Western countries. Meat is expensive in third world countries.
really? vegn in china is more expensive? just rice and veggies? i'd think edible meat would cost more? crab murderer.
